Founded in 1916 by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Ji, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) formerly Central Hindu College, is a public central university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious Central Universities in the country. It is the largest residential university in Asia with over 12,000 students living on campus.
The university has two campuses, 3 institutes, 16 faculties, 140 departments, 4 advanced centers and 4 interdisciplinary schools spanning a vast range of subjects pertaining to all branches of humanities, social science, science, technology, commerce, management, medicine, performing arts and visual arts. Foreign Language courses in BHU – Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Arts is the oldest and largest faculty and occupies a unique position in the history of Banaras Hindu University. It is also recognized as the “Mother Faculty” out of which many other faculties and departments of the university grew out. Realizing the great importance of foreign languages in India, Several foreign languages were established long back which impart teaching in many languages at various levels under the departments of Foreign Languages, French Studies, German Studies, Arabic Studies and Persian Studies.
The centre produces some of the finest teacher, interpreters, translators and numerous language experts. 1) Department of Foreign Languages – Russian and Chinese
The Department of Foreign Languages offers various part-time Diploma and full-time degree courses. At BHU, Department of Foreign Languages has the distinction of conducting teaching programmes in seven major Asian languages and European languages; namely, Chinese, Japanese, Sinhalese, Russian, Italian, Spanish and Polish.
The Department of Foreign Languages also planning to introduce degree courses in Japanese and several languages of the Southeast Asian countries following the recent thrust of our government towards Look East policy. These programmes range from Certificate/Diploma courses in all the languages to BA (Hons.), M.A. and Ph.D. Currently, the courses offered are:-
- BA (Hons.), M.A. and Ph.D. in Chinese and Russian.
- 2 year Part time Diploma in Chinese, Korean, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Sinhalese and Polish.
2) Department of German Studies
The Department of German Studies of Faculty of Arts was established on 6th August 1982. German is taught both as full-time and part-time courses covering language, literature & linguistics. It is today only one of such Department in the entire region of UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Eastern and North-Eastern India, where one can study German from Beginners’ Level through BA, MA and to Ph.D. in German Studies.
Department of German Studies maintains a good level of co-operation with establishments and institutions from German Speaking countries, namely Germany, Austria & Switzerland. Regular visits of many distinguished scholars from German speaking are arranged. They offer full-time B.A. (Hons), M.A. and PhD Program in German. The department also offers 2 year Diploma and 2 year PG Diploma in German.
3) Department of French Studies
The Department of French Studies courses are designed to acquire not only the French language skills & efficiency but also actively involved in research in Comparative Literature and Translation Studies. The Department of French Studies offers 2 year Diploma and 2 year PG Diploma in French and full-time B.A. (Hons), M.A. and PhD Program in French.
4) Department of Arabic Studies
The teaching of Arabic was started in 1917 and the department was established in 1973. The Department of Arabic studies has been conducting Research in the area of Arabic literature (modern and classical) and Arab History and Culture and other allied subjects.
The department of Arabic Studies plans to take up comparative studies with Indian culture and different Indian languages. The centre offers full-time B.A. (Hons), M.A. and PhD Program in Arabic. It also offers 1 year Part Time Certificate, 2 year Diploma and 2 year PG Diploma course in Arabic.
5) Department of Persian Studies
The Department of Persian studies was established in 1922. If you’re interested in learning Persian Language in India, then the Department of Persian Studies offers full-time B.A. (Hons), M.A. and PhD Program in Persian. It also offers 1 year Part-Time Certificate, 2 year Diploma and 2 year PG Diploma Course in Persian.
Admission procedures – Eligibility, Date and Entrance Exam
UG, PG and Ph.D. ENTRANCE TEST (UET/PET/RET) 2019-2020
For admission in B.A. (Hons.) in Arabic, Persian, Japanese, Chinese, German, French and Russian, The minimum eligibility is Passed or appeared 10+2 or equivalent Examination securing a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate.
For admission in M.A. in Arabic, French, German, Persian, Russian and Chinese, The minimum eligibility requirement is B.A. with PG Diploma/Advanced Diploma in the concerned language (Arabic / French / German Persian / Russian / Chinese) securing a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate both at B.A. and Diploma levels.
For admission in Ph.D. (Doctoral) programme in Arabic, French, German, Persian, Russian and Chinese, The minimum eligibility requirement is M.A. / Masters degree in the concerned or any one of the allied subjects (Arabic / French / German / Persian / Russian / Chinese). At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.
BHU Research Entrance Test (RET) is a paper-pen based research entrance test directed for Ph.D. Admission in BHU. RET consists 3 stages and Ph.D. aspirants need to clear each stage of this exam in order to be considered for Ph.D. Admission.
For Admission in Part-time Certificate and Diploma Language Courses, ONLY Regular students of the BHU currently enrolled in any on-going full-time course of Banaras Hindu University within the Main Campus of BHU can apply. The a Affiliated Colleges and Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, Barkachha, Mirzapur are not eligible for these short-term courses.
BHU conduct Undergraduate and Postgraduate All India Entrance Tests, hereinafter called “UET” and “PET” respectively, during April-May, 2019 for admission to various Foreign languages Undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses as mentioned above for the Session 2018-2019. Admissions will be made according to merit in the UET / PET / RET, subject to fulfillment of eligibility requirements mentioned below and availability of seats in the particular Course for which the candidate has applied for and appeared in the Entrance Test.
Every year, one can apply online by completing the application form from mid-January to end February. Admit Card is issued one week prior to the exam. All India entrance examination is conducted in April-May. The result is announced mostly in the 1st-2nd week of June. BHU Language Course Admission 2018-2019
- 1 year Part-time Certificate Courses in Arabic and Persian Language
- 2 years Part-time Diploma Courses in French, Spanish, German, Russian, Arabic, Persian, and Korean.
- Full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Arabic and Persian.
- The Part-Time Certificate and Diploma courses are open ONLY for Regular students of the BHU currently enrolled in any on-going full-time course of Banaras Hindu University within the Main Campus of BHU; (excluding Affiliated Colleges and Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, Barkachha, Mirzapur).
- Bonafide BHU students who are in Final year of their course are NOT ELIGIBLE for Diploma Courses.
- Candidates pursuing Ph.D. program at BHU Main Campus are eligible for admission within the two years from the date of their registration in Ph.D. program.
- The Full-time PG DIPLOMA Courses offered by Faculty of Arts are open to all. Applicant should NOT be enrolled in any full-time course of the University/elsewhere.
- A student can apply for ONLY ONE course i.e. Certificate or Diploma in any language.
