Foreign Language courses are also offered by many foreign embassies in Delhi through their cultural centre or language institute. Their main aim is to promote language, culture, traditions, arts, history, etc. in India through the organization of varied cultural events and multiple activities.

Embassy affiliated language institutes are widely recognised as one of the most important centres to learn foreign languages in India. Most of these cultural centres have the presence all over of the world. In India, however barring few like Alliance Française, Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan, Camões Institute and Russian Centre for Science and Culture, all have only one centre located in the heart of the capital city i.e. New Delhi.

The increase in demand for European languages and Asian languages in India has given an impetus to the teaching of foreign languages. It has resulted in few embassies to establish their language or cultural centre in Delhi though few have the presence for last few decades in Delhi and other parts of the country.

Many embassies have also collaborated with many schools and colleges in India to promote the language and culture by supporting teaching material, teacher training workshops, varied events and exchange programmes for students. They also foster admission of Indian students to their country’s higher educational institution.

The Cultural Wing of the Embassy such as Instituto Cervantes, Alliance Française, Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan, Camões Institute, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Mosai, etc. mainly focus on the spoken and written part of the language due to time constraints. However, they still do acquaint their students with the culture and literature of the language they teach.

There are many reasons why to learn in embassy affiliated cultural centre or learning institutes. International curriculum, native and qualified teachers, exposure to a varied range cultural events, ever-growing library, vibrant, friendly & dynamic environment, access to lots of study material and resources, etc. are some of the great reasons why to choose such cultural centres.

If you want to focus more on Culture, History, literature, linguistics, etc. in order to become college professor, researcher, translator or if you want to pursue degree level courses like BA, MA, M.Phil, PhD – Try for various colleges and universities known for foreign language courses in the country such as Delhi University, JNU, Mumbai University, EFLU, Pune University, Kolkata University, Jamia Millia Islamia, BHU, just to name a few.

Embassy language institutes do maintain good quality teaching through an adequate supply of good quality teachers including native teachers, international curriculum such as CEFR, TCF, JLPT, Ger, QCER, CECRL, MCER, DELE, DALF, DELF, HSK, just to name a few.

Embassy’s affiliated culture centre or learning institutes offer various types of courses like Standard / Regular, Extensive, Crash-courses, Intensive, classes for exam preparation, and Tailor-made customized courses. In most cases, They have weekdays & weekends and Morning & evening batches to suit your requirement and need. Generally, they run 2-4 batches per year with a duration of 3-4 months.

In addition, Students have access to their well-maintained library and can participate in various cultural activities. They also organise different programmes i.e., Music concerts, movie shows, seminars, art and photo exhibitions, cultural shows, and various other activities.

    1. There are no easy answers. Foreign Languages offer plenty of career options. However, job opportunities varies from language to language. 1. If you have the interest, you can definitely learn as a Hobby. You can use the language skills to read books in the corresponding language, or music or movie or travel abroad. Creativity is increased with the study of foreign languages. Don’t learn to make some passive or part-time income post-retirement. Not only it will be difficult but that will take long time. It won’t be worth in 60s. Use your existing skills and experience.

Learning online is not very effective and successful. Still, you can learn beginners level slowly and gradually. You can choose a relatively easy language such as Italian or Spanish or Portuguese.

    1. Instituto Cervantes has divided DELE A1 to C1 into 16 levels. Fees for each level is between Rs 13,000 to 16,000. Books, DELE Exam fees, etc. are not included. Thus, it will cost around 2.5+ Lakhs to complete DELE C1. LINK
