The Department of Russian language was created at the University of Delhi in the year 1946 . The Department, which was initially conducting only part-time courses introduced full-time courses, i.e. Intensive Advanced Diploma in Russian and M.A. in Russian Studies. Other languages of the Department were offered as optional courses in the Masters programme in Russian to promote interdisciplinary studies.
Part-Time Russian One-Year Certificate, One-Year Diploma and One-year Advanced Diploma are offered in the department. Full time course in Russian Language is available only in Arts Faculty (Department of Slavonic & Finno-Ugrian Studies). Currently, They offer One Year Full Time Intensive Advanced Diploma, M.A. , M.Phil and PhD in Russian. Admission procedure is based on entrance test.

Established in 1965, The Centre of Russian studies (CRS) is a well known Centre for the study of Russian language, literature and culture in India. The Centre of Russian Studies is the oldest Centre of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The Centre promotes area specific as well as inter-disciplinary research activities in the field of Russian Language, Literature, Culture and Translation Studies. The Centre has an expertise in various aspects of Russian language and linguistics, 19th Century, 20th Century, as well as Contemporary Russian Literature.
