This article will provide you with detailed coverage of the six types of foreign language programs.
The globalized economy, immigration, study abroad, and better career possibilities drive foreign language learning in India.
Knowing a new language can boost your employment prospects and possibly your paycheck in India and abroad.
Young Indians are now passionately devoting their time to learn a new language.
A few decades back, English language skills used to be enough to get you a job.
Now it is only fair to say that speaking a foreign language can open several career choices.
In increasing globalization, frequent cultural activities, events, entertainment resources, and interactions have stimulated interest in these languages.
French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Mandarin are the top 5 choices!
The process commonly consists of five broad steps if you want to embark on the language learning journey.

Types of Foreign language Courses
While I wrote plenty of articles to answer these vital questions, now I think the time has come to answer the third one.
There are various ways you can learn the language of your choice in India.
The following are SIX types of foreign language courses available for interested language learners in India:
1. Full-time Degree Programs in Universities
One option you will have when looking for the best ways to learn a foreign language is a full-time study at any College or University.
A full-time language course lets you focus intensively on your language academic work without interruptions.
Examples of full-time degree foreign language courses in India are Undergraduate (Bachelor program), Postgraduate (Master’s degree), M.Phil, and Ph.D. (Research doctorate).
You must have obtained a 12th board examination or other recognized equivalent to get a Bachelor’s degree.
For a Master’s degree in languages, you must have graduated in any stream, and have higher proficiency in the language concerned.
Admission is typically through entrance exams or cut-off marks.
While the number of course units and time (hours) may depend on the language course and the university or college institution.
Full-time language learners usually take more units per semester than any other language study course.
Language learners who study full-time might spend about 25-40 contact hours per week (lectures, discussions, etc.). There are also non-contact hours (homework, assignments, self-study, etc.) for learning.
It may not be essential for you if you’ve already completed your bachelor’s or postgraduate degree.
But those who are just 12th passed or want admission in a BA in foreign languages have to pursue two courses simultaneously. Like, such a degree course in a stream other than language and a professional language course.
Why take two courses when one is enough for you to kick-start a career in languages?
If you want to focus more on culture, history, literature, and linguistic aspects, become a college lecturer, researcher, translator or interpreter, or writer. Then, pursuing full-time regular courses in any Indian University is the right thing to do.
Here is what to expect when studying a foreign language course in India under a full-time program.
- More workload and curricula may include 25-40 learning hours each week.
- More units/subjects per semester.
- The students don’t work while studying.
- One course enables you to work towards a successful career in language.
2. Part-Time Courses in Universities and Colleges
A part-time course in foreign language study in India is the opposite of a full-time degree program.
The workload is lighter under a part-time schedule, but the course will cover fewer modules and content.
The hours spent in actual contact and non-actual contact learning are usually fewer.
The time and pace required to complete the course might depend on the course structure and how much time you commit to it.
The primary advantage of taking part-time courses is that it affords you to combine employment and academics.
Thus, satisfying the demands of both at the same time.
If you are working or studying part-time or full-time, a part-time language course is ideal for learning the language of your dream.
Most universities and colleges in India offer part-time and full-time on most foreign language subjects. But not all offer a part-time program for every language.
So, make sure you verify before putting in for admission.
Examples of part-time language classes in India are certificates, diplomas, and advanced diplomas.
The duration for each course is usually between 6 months to 2 years.
3. Foreign Embassies affiliated Cultural Centers
Embassies affiliated culture center is yet another terrific option for foreign language courses in India.
Many foreign embassies in India have a cultural learning centers at strategic locations in Delhi and other countries.
Interested people can register and learn that country’s language.
All the embassy foreign language courses follow an interdisciplinary approach, emphasizing the history, language, literature, culture, and custom of the respective country.
By studying in these centers, you will get exposure to diverse cultural activities, including music concerts, movie shows, seminars, events, international curriculum, and native and qualified foreign language teachers.
Moreover, you can also access an ever-growing library and language learning resources.
There are several distinguished language institutes affiliated with various embassies.
Some of them are Alliance Française, Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan, Russian Center for Science and Culture, Instituto Cervantes, Mosai, SejongHakdang, Camões Institute, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, to name a few.
Delhi is home to all Embassies’ cultural centers.
Some of these centers are also found in other cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Pune, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, etc.
Depending on the program, an embassy-affiliated center offers specific learning hours according to the student’s proficiency and the type of courses.
For instance, the French classes at Alliance Francaise in Delhi specialize in teaching French. It runs 162 hours for beginners and intermediates, while advanced learners C1 and C2 have 216 total learning hours.
These institutes are also authorized centers for various foreign language ability tests. It includes HSK, TOPIK, JLPT, DELF and DALF, CILS, CELI, TEF, TCF, CAPLE, DELE, or SIELE, Zertifikat Deutsch, TestDaF, TORFL, to name a few.
4. Private Institutes and Learning Centers
India has many private language study institutes that teach foreign languages.
Examples of such institute are Jawaharlal Nehru Academy, India’s one oldest language institutes.
It conducts many foreign language courses like French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese language courses in Delhi.
Another example is LanguageNext, which offers German, Spanish, and French classes in Noida.
The study period can take 3 months to 3 years, depending on the area, levels, and achievement the student aims to cover.
The actual class contact and the time spent, including fees, also vary from institute to institute.
Also, note that the certificate you will receive from such learning centers may not have the same weight as the official international diplomas.
Thus, besides their own exams, you should also appear for those language proficiency exams conducted by the respective government.
5. Online Foreign Language Classes
An online course program is a relatively new and innovative method of learning a new language.
No matter what the time is or where you are, you can learn whatever foreign language you choose with an online course program.
All it requires is a PC, laptop, tablet, or smartphone connected to the internet.
Online language courses use a powerful interactive and practical platform to participate in visual classes, download e-course materials, and access video lessons, and self-assessment quizzes.
Some online apps also offer free language lesson transcripts and more.
Fees and study hours depend on the host of the online course you choose.
I can recommend some of the best online course providers for you want. Just leave your questions and comments below.
Online classes are still in a nascent stage.
While there are several pros and cons of online education, lack of interaction and no personalization are some significant pitfalls.
Besides, motivation goes down over a while, which is why language learning fails since very few people complete the course.
Only take online sessions if it is not feasible to join any educational institution.
6. Individual or One-to-One Tuition
If you have some fixed ideas, time restraint reasons, or specific goals about what class they want to take.
Well, then One to One, Individual lessons are yet another excellent option for you.
One to One or individual class is another way to learn any language.
The sessions’ schedule is generally by the hour and usually occurs at either student or teacher home.
By spending more time with a single teacher who knows the candidates and their capabilities and abilities, they will receive more considerable attention and personalized lessons.
Customized private tuition is an intensive and effective method designed to meet your personal requirements and objectives.
With home tutoring, you can learn at your comfort as a one-to-one coaching mode is becoming increasingly flexible and convenient.
It gives you the flexibility to decide your learning speed, preferred class timing, and of course, undivided and personalized attention.
There is also flexibility in the length of the classes. For example, you can time around learning goals rather than a timetable.
Unlike Universities and Institutes, students usually have minimal, if any, choice regarding who their teachers are.
Opting for individual classes does allow the student or their parents to pick a foreign language tutor that they feel comfortable with.
You can choose the right teacher, who can inspire and engage, can make a big difference for the language learner.
You can also opt for multiple sessions per week. Thus such language students can complete the course in a short time.
There are three disadvantages too.
Firstly these classes are expensive. Unlike fixed fees for group classes, you have to shell out a certain amount for each session. So whatever you decide, the overall price will be much higher than in group classes.
Secondly, there is no opportunity to interact with other students, competitive feelings, develop a group dynamic, and participate in any discussion.
And lastly, these private tuitions may become tedious if the teacher does not find new approaches or the learner does not respond to the instructor.
Which foreign language course is the best?
A full-time degree course will always be the best since it allows you to dedicate all your time to studying and finishing the course in time.
A full-time university/college degree language certification is valid for life and held in high esteem.
However, suppose you are gainfully employed or pursuing a full-time degree course. Then, you still want to study a particular language.
In that case, the best option for you is to study at an embassy-affiliated cultural center or any reputed private institute.
It will allow you to manage work and study together. Still, it will take you extra effort to achieve higher proficiency in the language of your choice.
Plus, language institutes and the embassy’s cultural center courses are best for people who want to travel and need to provide evidence of competence in a specific language.
They do allow you to achieve your traveling or job requirements.
However, they are not comparable to college and university degrees but good enough for a significant majority of language jobs.
Online courses like the Open University Program are best for people whose jobs or circumstances require them to always be on the move.
It also enables people who are not privileged to have a university, private language institute, or embassy cultural learning center near them. They can study through distance learning.
So, whatever is the case, the best foreign language courses will depend on your needs, where you are, what you do, and the time you have to spare.

I am interested to learn a foreign language. I have 4+ years of experience in Digital Marketing. Please guide me in which language would be suitable for me according to my work experience & career purpose. Which language should I learn for a good salary package in India as well as foreign?
There isn’t any language that can be considered. You can try some of the widely spoken languages like French and Spanish, but all languages offer some opportunities.
Hello Sir, I want to be an interpreter for Korean and Japanese. I am interested in the literature and the culture of other countries. So what subject should I take in class 11th to do so? For me, science is not an option, and I am really confused about whether I should take commerce or humanities.

Hello, sir. I’ll be completing my Bachelor’s in Science degree soon. I have always been interested in languages, and currently, I’m trying to learn Spanish online.
1. Am I eligible to do an MA in Spanish?
2. If so, would it help me to pursue a career in Spanish (maybe a teacher or tutor)?
3. Or should I go for DELE instead?
1. No. For admission, you need Spanish knowledge equivalent to BA/Advanced Diploma or DELE B2. Then you can clear the entrance test. 2. You can pursue a career in Spanish, irrespective of where you study. 3. DELE is also fine, but it is a diploma and not a degree. Aim for B2/C1. You can consider Masters in the stream of your choice + DELE B2/C1.
Hello Sir,
How are you? I hope you are fine. I just want to ask that from where I can do any online or distance French language programs like “Teacher’s training program” or “Diploma in teaching a foreign language.”
Thank you in advance.
I’m not aware of any online or distance learning course.
Hi sir,
I am interested in learning the Korean language, but there is no availability of offline courses in Punjab. It is very difficult for me to move to Delhi, Indore, or Mumbai. Can you please suggest me the ways I can learn. Which language has more benefits for translator jobs? Korean, or Japanese as some people told me to learn Japanese?
Thanks
While Japanese offers more translation jobs than Korean, but the competition is also high. It would be better to pick the one as per your interest. You can try online resources like books, one-to-one online classes. You can find online tutors on various sites like Verbling, iTalki, verbal planet, Preply, and many more.
Sir, I want to learn Korean online. Which app is best for that?
There is no particular one. You can try a few and learn the basics. Beyond that, look for a Korean teacher or learning center for offline classes.

Sir I just completed my MBA in marketing. So, please tell me what language is best for me? I am very passionate about learning a new language. Please guide me sir as I’m very confused.
There is no best language. The choice of language depends on your time-frame, purpose, the effort you can put, interest, and goal. These things are very subjective. Thus, the selection differs. Go through some of the articles on this blog. It will assist you.
Hi. I am an Interior Designer by profession, but I have always been interested in learning a foreign language. Which is the best online course to learn a foreign language? Please suggest.

Hi, I am from the HR dept of a corporate. What is the fee structure different for German corporate lessons (onsite) and German classes (at school premises)? We want our employees to learn German but don’t know which is better – Whether invite the tutor to our office and conduct a class during work hours or send our nominated employees at language institute out of working hours and offer reimbursement. The employees are approx. 4-5 members.
Onsite corporate training will be better as employees save valuable time, customized courses as per requirement, and more productive for the company. The fee varies depending on location and the profile of the German trainer. You can contact a few in your city.
Sir,
I am doing an advanced diploma in the Spanish language. Can I get a bachelor’s degree from this?
Advanced Diploma is not equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree. If you wish to pursue a BA in Spanish, you can try various Universities.
Hello sir, I am a full-time government teacher and interested in pursuing Japanese / German language in online mode. Could you please suggest me some best options. I’m living in Dehradun.

Sir,
I am currently residing in Vadodara and would like to do part-time Certification Courses in Spanish and French. But while surfing via the Internet and talking to some of the Institutes here, I found it very ineligible and inefficient (also very inflated ratings here). So kindly suggest as to what institutes or medium should be suitable for me, especially for part-time Certified courses.
For French, Alliance Francaise in Vadodara is the best option. I don’t know any suitable option for learning Spanish in Vadodara.
Hello sir
I am a BA, B.Ed first year student but I want to pursue a French language course at a degree level. Sir, please give me your opinion regarding the best college for the French degree course.
If you’re already doing a degree course, it won’t be possible to pursue another full-time degree program simultaneously. If you wish to partake in the BA program in French, then there are several options. Some of the good choices are JNU, DU, BHU, Mumbai University, EFL Hyderabad, VBU, to name a few. You can browse entire list — BA in Foreign Languages
Your blog posts are incredibly insightful and have been most helpful. I was wondering if learning Spanish or Mandarin would be more suitable for a dental graduate. Speaking in terms of future opportunities and scope in the healthcare field, what would you suggest? I am a practitioner in Mumbai, have already learnt French up to A1 level, and would love your guidance in making a better decision. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for your appreciation Dr. Shelke 🙂 It may not be advantageous in your career path. Even if there are some possibilities, it would be challenging to find a position where the combination is a prerequisite. You can always learn as a hobby, and who knows what the future holds for you.
Sir, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering. I am a second-year student. I want to learn Spanish. Can you please suggest some good options. I live in Punjab.
There are not many good options for learning Spanish in Punjab. You can try any nearby Institute offering Spanish classes.
Hello sir, I hail from Delhi, NCR. I completed my graduation and did a 1-year Spanish course from DU last to last year (both simultaneously). But when I heard about Spanish embassy classes, I got confused about which one to choose and which is better.
1. I already have a year gap after completing my 1-year Spanish from DU.
2. Now, I was thinking of going to the embassy to learn Spanish to understand better and interactive sessions (if that is the case there, I am not sure about that either).
3. But I also feel that since I have completed 1 year of learning Spanish from DU, why waste money and time learning the same from the embassy!
4. Please help me out here to conclude:-
A – should I stick with DU and give entrance and take admission there in some college,
B- or should I learn Spanish from the embassy?
If B, should I give entrance and start from A2 / B1 level (you, please suggest this too), Or should I learn from the start?
It doesn’t matter where you study as long as you do it properly and improve your Spanish skills. For example, suppose you enroll at DU colleges, which aren’t known for quality part-time language courses. In that case, you should put extra effort into enhancing your conversation skills and take DELE/SIELE to gain recognized diplomas. And if you join Cervantes, it’s good, though expensive. There are many other private institutes too that are also good. Also, there isn’t any significant benefit to studying at an embassy-affiliated center. You can still learn in the same way and take the same test.
Hello sir,
I’m going to complete my BA (Hons) in History next year, yet I want to become a translator or an interpreter either in Japanese or Mandarin. For achieving this, do I have to join the short term course or the long term course? I have been thinking of joining EFLU next year.
Long term, like five years. EFLU is the right choice!
Hello Vikash sir, I have completed B2 in the German language now am learning C1. I have a degree of B.Sc and B.ED. Sir, I want to know that am I eligible for MA in German? Later, I also want to do M.Phil and Ph.D. in language.
Yes, you are eligible to appear for the entrance test of MA in German. You can apply early next year.
So can anyone apply for MA in German after the C1 level or Advance diploma? As per my understanding, we need a BA degree in German. kindly guide sir.
Yes, after completing the C1 or Advanced Diploma, one can apply for the entrance test for MA in German. You need a bachelor in any subject, and not necessarily in German.
Sir,
I am a graduate in engineering computer science, but I will try some foreign language. I have no idea about course like a degree or diploma, please.
In that case, I’d suggest reading several articles over the new few weeks. I cannot give generic answers as it might not be useful for you.
Hello Sir,
I wish to start a private Foreign Language center in Lucknow.
Please advise on the following:
1. Do we mandatorily need to get registered with some embassy / University /Institute? If yes, how to go about this?
2. Though I am in touch with individual teachers who will be taking classes for languages who will teach traditionally with books available in the market. Can I get some well-designed course material to present to the inquiries?
3. Can we issue a certificate to the candidate without any affiliation? And will it hold any value for the candidate?
Regards
Sumit Srivastava
1. No.
2. No. Most of the course contents are designed and developed by teachers and language experts as per requirements. While there are plenty of resources, however, customized study materials are best. Maybe you can hire a trainer who will do the same. I have made the entire course content over the past decade for my Institute LanguageNext.
3. Yes, but you need to register the company and need to obtain necessary approvals from local or/and State Govt where you want to run the institute. The value will depend on the credibility, reputation, and popularity. That takes a long time! I wish you good luck with your future endeavors!
Hello sir,
I want to learn French. How can I learn this language and from where should I start? Could you tell me the process of this language?
You can join any French Institute in your locality. I can suggest a few options if I know where you want to enroll.
Hello sir,
I have an interest in learning Spanish and I am also learning that with the help of an app Duolingo. But I want to earn a certificate in Spanish. could you please tell me the websites that offer online diploma in Spanish as a foreign language and also the career opportunities that I can opt for.
I’m not aware of any organization that offers an online Diploma in Spanish. That is because online language classes are neither productive nor successful. The apps like Duolingo is only meant to learn little Spanish through fun activities.
Beyond that, it is not beneficial. If you want to make a career in Spanish, join any Institute for regular courses. It will take 2-3 years to achieve the upper Intermediate level, a minimum prerequisite to get any Spanish job.
Hello sir,
I have done my (vocational) diploma in Spanish from du. And need some help deciding from where should I continue pursuing Spanish rather than Cervantes. It would be of great help if you enlighten me about the colleges and when the forms are filled with an advanced diploma in Spanish.
If you want to pursue an Advanced Diploma, you can apply at Daulat Ram, St. Stephen’s or ANDC when the forms will be available. As far as private institutes are concerned, Instituto Hispania is a good choice in Delhi.
Hello,
I have done my pg in fashion business which includes merchandising (apparel or hard goods). I am a beginner and have interest in learning Mandarin. Please suggest the best institute, course, and scope in career.

Sir, I had inquired about German courses and in some centre, they told that the course certificate issued is valid only for 2 years. And in other centres they told me that’s not true, it is a lifetime valid certificate. Now I am totally confused. Please let me know the clear details please as I wanted to pursue the German Course.
Which course you’re talking about? The International Goethe-Zertifikats A1 through C2 do not expire, means lifetime validity.
Hello sir, I am pursuing chartered accountancy. Do chartered Accountant with spanish offer good scope? And will embassy learning provide a certificate?
There are limited job opportunities where a combination of CA and Spanish is required. You can learn as a hobby. For Spanish certification, you can appear for DELE or SIELE Exam after completing the level concerned. These Diplomas are accepted everywhere.
Hello Sir,
I want to study German till B1, B2. Which institutes do you recommend to learn German?
That will depend on the location. With a presence in 13 cities, Goethe-Institute Max Mueller is a great choice.
Sir, I am looking for a full-time Japanese language course at any best University with hostel facility.
The last date is over for JNU, EFLU, BHU. You can try BA in Japanese from Visva Bharati University in West Bengal, or Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth in Pune, etc.
I got compartment in 12th in one subject. So, if I clear my JNU entrance. Can I get admission in JNU after clearing my compartment exam? Because the compartment result will come on the first week of August. Please reply sir!
I don’t think it’s possible since admission will take place in June/July. You can still contact JNU for the confirmation. In any case, you can appear for the test to gain some experience.
I want to learn Spanish but I have only 3 months. Please suggest what can I do?
You can join any private institute for short-term Beginners level Spanish course.
Thanks,
But can you please suggest me some institution in Delhi.
You can try Instituto Hispania in Panchsheel Park.
Can you please suggest me some French Institutes in Delhi?
You can try Alliance Française de Delhi.
Dear Vikashji,
we are interested to start a foreign language institute at Imphal, the capital city of Manipur. Languages in mind are German, Spanish, Chinese, Thai, Myanmarese. We have research scholars at Manipur University for these languages, who are willing to take classes. Our main query and advice from you are regarding the Course certification and affiliation, other formalities to start these courses and also would like to go for affiliation with an authorization body whose certificates will be accepted worldwide in respect of jobs application, etc.
That is a great initiative. I will update you shortly through email.
Hi
I want to learn French, via online class. Does the course in Udemy or coursera help? If not, what other options do I have? My motive of learning it is primarily to enlarge my writing envelope and to have a secondary source of income as a French teacher.
I’m not a big fan of Online Courses. You can try Udemy or Coursea but it will be difficult to achieve proficiency beyond the elementary level and it would take you a long time and you need to be very very disciplined. In short, It is better to join any reputed learning centre for regular French classes.
Hello sir,
I am from Dehradun but I don’t know that there is any language course college here. Could you please tell me where is language course college available?
The Doon University through School of Languages offers BA and MA in French, Spanish, German, Japanese and Chinese Language. Plus, you can also join Alliance Française in Dehradun for a part-time French course.

I have done B1 delf in French am I eligible to take admission in du advance diploma course?
No. Diploma in French is required for Advanced Diploma. They may take a test if French course was done from any other institute. Why you need an Advanced Diploma? In my opinion, DELF B2 is better than DU’s Advanced Diploma. Since you’ve already done B1, you can continue with an goal to complete B2 and C1.
