Dear Sir,
I am Kumar, currently residing in Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. I have studied the Russian language at Andhra University, waltair in the year 1982 and also worked as a Russian language translator and interpreter a long time back. I will be superannuating from Govt. service next year and interested in seeking a post-retirement job either in India or the Russian federation. Since a considerable amount of time has passed after I had passed the Russian course, I have forgotten the language.
I would like to revive the fluency again and whether re-learning will have an advantage in securing jobs? Kindly advice. Please bear in mind that your advice will make me either again to read the language or leave it. Kindly reply at the earliest. If learning the language will be helpful, kindly indicate which fields I can secure a job. I am basically a lawyer by profession. Currently, I am learning Chinese also, Chinese is a very difficult language.
Hello Mr. Kumar,
There was a time when Russian was one of the most popular foreign languages in India. Currently, opportunities are quite limited as far as job opportunities are concerned. There are few new Russian job openings these days, at least in India. It will also take lots of time to re-learn. Thus, you can also learn another language with better career prospects.
Post-retirement, It is challenging to find a suitable and excellent job in the languages since you’ll start from scratch. A freelance is an option for you provided that you reach higher proficiency. It may take a few years. Don’t learn any language solely based on your career at this juncture of your life. If you wish to learn, you should study but only as a hobby and who knows you might end up getting something you want with the combination of your existing and language skills. 🙂
