What is the Global Korea Scholarship?

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is a South Korean government initiative that provides students with scholarships. Before this, they referred to it as KGSP (Korean Government Scholarship Program).

The scholarship program allows students worldwide to study in South Korea. NIIED administers GKS on behalf of the Ministry of Education in Korea.

Each year, the Korean government organizes a competitive scholarship program called the “Global Korea Scholarship” to offer students more global opportunities.

The program allows students to complete undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in the Republic of Korea.

Seats and Track

There are 200 scholarships available for GKS undergraduate programs for 2023-2024.

The embassy track and the university track are two different ways to apply. Through the embassy, they select 119, while 81 students are available to universities.

For the GKS graduates, research, and doctoral research, there are 1278 scholarships for 2023-2024. This includes 663 through the embassy and 615 for the university track.

(i) Total seats for India (Undergraduate courses)

There are 2 seats through the embassy track for Indian applicants in 2023-2024. For the university track, there are 55 scholars, and open to all participating countries.

There are also 9 seats for regional and 3 for associate, and open to 7 countries of southwest Asia (Nepal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka)

(ii) Total seats for India (Postgraduate programs)

More seats have been allocated to India for GKS-G (master’s, doctorate, and research) than for bachelor’s programs. Here is the breakdown of quotas for Indian applicants for the 2023-2024 GKS graduate programs.

Under the embassy track, 22 seats are available for Indians in the general applicants’ category and 1 for Korean language teachers.

The research program has one seat reserved for India. There are also 5 seats open to Indians and 144 other participating countries.

Under the university track, 19 seats are for General majors and 11 for Science & Engineering majors of the Regional Universities. Thus, 30 seats are available for Indian students on the university track.

The university track also has 5 quotas for research programs. Indian nationals and citizens of 76 NIIED-listed countries are eligible.

To summarize, 54 (22+1+1+19+11) GKS graduate seats are available to India in 2023-2024. Indians can also apply for 10 additional quotas under both tracks for research programs. As per the final result for 2022, they selected 61 Indians.

How to apply?

They accept applications only during certain months. They made an announcement about this on the government’s website. This varies from program to program.

The application period for undergraduate programs is usually September-October. For graduate programs, this period is usually February-March.

Applicants must submit 1 set of application forms, certificates (notarized), and a recommendation letter sealed in one envelope.

Once you pass the interview round and are selected, you must re-submit 1 set of consular-authenticated (or apostilled) documents. This is valid for 2021 only. For 2023-2024, check with the concerned authority.

5 Things Decide GKS Scholarship selection

Getting a scholarship isn’t that easy. Here are five top factors determining your chances of receiving the GKS scholarship. (These are my view).

  1. Your academic qualifications and achievements from school times till today and extracurricular activities.
  2. Recommendation letters from various educators who taught you in various institutions.
  3. How good you write your personal statement and SOP.
  4. Korean language, specially TOPIK certification. The higher level, the better!
  5. How did you perform in the interview (Your knowledge of South Korea, your skills, aim, and reasons for going to Korea, to name a few)? They may, after all, ask whatever they want.

Remember, these aren’t official selection criteria, but my guesswork is based on various reasons, hearsay, feedback, and understanding. So, take only suggestions and not hard facts.

Sir, while applying through embassy track, we’ve been asked for original apostilled documents. Does that mean I can submit a true copy of the original apostilled documents and three other normal copy of the documents and keep the original apostilled ones? Sir, the problem with submitting the original apostilled documents is that in case of not getting selected through embassy track, I can reapply through university track within the due time cause I’ll already have the original apostilled documents.

    Hello Sir
I’ll apply this year for gks ug and I got 95.8% in class 10 and 94.8% (PCM) in class 12. I also had given a SAT and achieved 1070 score. Is it is good to apply or not. Should I send SAT scores or not. I also want to know that ielts or tofel scores are must or not. Can I apply without ielts or tofel scores? And can I send my school certificates from lower classes? I also achieved course completion certificate from ISRO, should I send this? Course completion certificate is beneficial or not? I also have some certificates digitally or their pdf how can I send these too?

You can apply this year. While SAT score is not required, you can mention it in your personal statement and SOP. English and Korean language tests add some points and boost your prospects. You only submit what is required, though you can mention some personal achievements and skills in extra-curricular activities.

That is difficult to say as it depends on your interest and feasibility. For example, paintings, learning languages, being excellent in musical instruments, and writing something awe-inspiring, to name a few.

    Good Evening Sir
    1) Sir, when I was in 10th class there was COVID. So we have given 100% marks in 10th. Is this okay? But I’m sure I will score more than 95% marks in the 12th standard. Will the 10th class percentage will affect it?
    2) Also as it is now April and the scholarship will start in September. So I’m thinking of giving a try for IELTS for more chances of acceptance. Should I try?
    3) Also, for embassy track, is it necessary to get documents apostilled or will notarize also work?
    4) We have to write sop in online mode and then get it print out or with a pen?

In 10th I got excluding my additional subject 76% and considering the top 5 subjects it is 83%. In 12th I have 6 subjects as well, and I expect to get around 78% excluding my additional subject and over 82% including my top 5. So it would be very much appreciated by me if they will see my top 5 marks and whether I meet the requirement of 80% or above required for applying to the scholarship. Hello sir the questions I wanted to ask are.

    1. I am pursuing BTech so my question is I have 6 mark sheets for each semester. Does every semester’s marksheet have to contain the previous all semester’s marks? So do I need to apostille all of them, or the last mark sheet will work?
    2. Because we need to fill the 10th,12 th and last semester mark sheet on shakshat portal so do we need to send hard copies of the 10th, and 12th mark sheets to MHRD as well or only the college mark sheet. I am confused in this.

      1. Apostilled for final result and transcript, and not semester-wise.
      2. They ask for documents of last qualification, and not all. Even if they do, apostilled not required.

But I’m confused in question 1 because my seniors have apostilles there on all semester mark sheets. But they don’t have mark sheets like mine. My mark sheet contains all previous semester CGPA BUT not subjects’ name or Mark.

Example:- My 6 semester contain 1,2,3,4,5, and 6th semester CGPA not subjects till 6th sem. If they need all batchelor transcript apostille? BCz it is confirmed I have to send all My bachelor semesters marksheet as an expected graduation student. But I’m only confused into which one I have to apostille last one or all semesters?

        Plz confirm it.

Hello sir, I went through your article on the GKS scholarship & I had some queries regarding it :

    1. I completed my 12th in 2016 with Commerce background & scored 42%.
    2. I have a year’s diploma certificate in fashion design, which I received in 2017.
    3. Due to personal family issues, I had to do a job in a BPO from August 2018 to April 2019.
    4. I finally completed my BA with my major in English Literature in 2022 (started in 2019), where I scored 75.08% (overall) in my score was – The first year – 89.25, Second year – 78.75, and the Third year – 57. 25.
    5. My 10th GPA was 6.2 and 11th % was 54.
    6. Due to the lockdown, I never got the chance to participate in extracurricular activities as my college conducted/ offered nothing.
    7. But during my school days, I’ve participated in many competitions & programs that the school offered, and I have each & every certificate for those times.
    8. As my university told me before that they won’t be able to provide me my bachelor’s degree or a date by which I will receive my degree/result, I have already failed to apply for the GKS-G 2023-24 as I don’t have all my documents, including bachelors degree.
    9. Also, my uni is not a central university or doesn’t fall under NAAC, INI, or CFTI, but it comes under NIRF, which is MHRD approved & is eligible to receive Central assistance, as per UGC Act 1956.

But the thing is that as per GKS-G guidelines, under the “Criteria for nomination” column, they said candidates who passed from NAAC, INI, CFTI & Central university would get the priority. Also, there is a statement – “NIRF ranking/ marks obtained in graduation to be used as a tie-breaker in making nominations.” Which I don’t understand at all.

Please Sir, based on my overall report, please tell me that now, as I’m trying to upgrade my profile by giving TOPIK, TOEFL & internships in marketing & management courses, please tell me that I still have even a slight chance of getting the scholarship for MBA in 2024-25. Please let me know the meaning of this university criteria as well.

    Please help me.

I appreciate your effort and zeal to get GKS, but unfortunately since you got less than 80% in graduation as well as 12th (though less important), you won’t be eligible to apply. Rest of the things matter only if you have 80% or more overall.

Thank you so much for the response sir, but sir I’ve seen YT vids of prior successful applicants who revealed that they managed to get the scholarship even with a percentage like 60 or 65 & with low cgpa as well.

According to them, their updated profile & a clear vision of the benefit of the scholarship in terms of their future helped them a lot. And, even I have a clear picture of why exactly I want the scholarship. It’s not only because of the Hallyu wave, (it did help me discover the scholarship, though) but it’s just that some real serious family issues affected my educational consistency. But now as things are finally settled & I am back to focus on my career, all I want is to achieve my biggest dream.

So will the percentage really gonna take my chances away?? Even if I had a perfect study plan & upgraded profile which showcases my capabilities & skills. Even if I ended up making my profile closest to what they’re looking for??

I won’t say “exactly like that” because I don’t believe in the existence of perfection. But sir, should I really stop trying just because I’ve a lesser percentage??

80% or more is mandatory, so not possible. Even if one apply, chances of selections are low considering thousands of applicants with over 90% apply each year for only a few seats.

I can’t seem to find the comment section. I had a question I will be graduating in 2023 around June or July, not sure, but as of now I’m done with 4 semesters, and I’m giving my fifth semester now, but the results are going to be out around mid-February, and the gks application it starts around the first or second week of Feb, so I was wondering If I can still apply for the scholarship with my past few semesters results?

That means i do not have any documents regarding my graduation while applying for gks. What should i do?

Once you send it to the embassy, they forward the selected one to NIIED and the university. So it is like Embassy → NIIED → University. Embassy track applicants have to submit 1 apostilled document and 3 photocopies of the same. All should be in original forms, and submitted as per checklist order in the form.

You can check the required document in the official document, and even I wrote several times. Go through it, and you will get all answers.

You have to apostille your last academic degree. For example, the 12th mark sheet for GKS-UG. School also certifies your CGPA certificate if it was converted.

It is mentioned in the official guideline.

First, you need to apostille the previous academic transcripts. You can convert marks into one of the official grading scales of CGPA through online sites like SCHOLARO. Then, you need an authorized document attested by the school/university confirming and validating the same.

I would be going through the embassy track. I would have 4 sets of documents: 1 original and 3 photocopies. I would put all these 4 sets in different transparent/opaque packets (along with the sealed recommendation letter) (I am not gonna staple them or pin them but gonna put them in packets). Then I would put all these 4 packets in an envelope and address it to the embassy. Is my envelope proceeder okay? Do I need to prepare an envelope like this?

Regarding the apostillation of transcripts, I have several inquiries. My home is in Mumbai, India.

My university does not give out actual copies of attested transcripts; instead, they only offer online attestation on transcripts supplied by my college. According to the GKS documents requirements from last year, I discovered I needed to apostille my transcripts, but my university assured me they would send them to you straight online. Additionally, as I previously indicated, the university does not provide hard copies of transcripts. Thus, I am unable to apostille my transcript.

        Please let me know,

        1. If sending my university transcript, an attestation, and a letter explaining my grades is acceptable.
        2. For a GKS application, will you accept an online transcript with attestation?
        3. Or should I obtain an apostille for the transcript that my college provided? without any attestation from my university?

I appreciate your consideration of this subject in advance. I eagerly await your response. I gratefully thank you in advance.

I am unsure about online copies, as one needs hard original copies for apostillation. You have to check with the concerned government entity whether they do apostillation with online transcripts. If yes, you are done. Otherwise, ask for a hard copy. Last time I checked, apostillation is mandatory for transcripts.

On the original set, I will write the address of the Indian embassy. What address should I write on the 3 photocopied sets? Should I put the embassy address or the 3 University address

I’m not sure about that. Transcripts are transcripts and can’t be replaced with any other document. You can check with them.

You need to apostille your father and mother’s documents for Indian citizenship and last degree like 12th for graduation, etc.

In the next 1-2 months, they will publish the requirement for 2023. You can then check and do the needful. Last year only 12th was needed along with citizenships of yours and parents.
