What is the Korean Proficiency Test?
Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is designed for non-native Korean speakers to certify their Korean language knowledge.
It is currently being offered SIX times a year to people studying Korean in Korea and twice annually to people in other countries, including India.
The test measures your Korean proficiency through listening comprehension, writing, and reading.
Recognition and Acceptance
Founded in 1997 by the Korea Research Foundation, TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) is designed and administered by the National Institute for International Education – NIIED.
It is an entity under the Korean Ministry of Education, the Republic of Korea. (국립국제교육원.)
TOPIK is the most globally recognized Korean language proficiency certification widely accepted by public and private educational institutions, governments, and corporations.
Difference between TOPIK, EPS-TOPIK & KLPT?
TOPIK is a general Korean test for those who want to study or work or immigrate to Korea.
EPS-TOPIK is Employment Permit System-Test of Proficiency in Korean. EPS TOPIK is needed by those who want to work in Korea as EPS workers (for factory jobs or manufacturing).
As per EPS TOPIK 2021, the exam is conducted only once a year in 16 countries, and the age limit is 18 to 39. There is no EPS TOPIK test center in India.
The exam consists of only the beginners listening and reading tests required for day-to-day activity and perform diverse tasks at work.
KLAT, Korean Language Ability Test, is operated by the Korea Educational Testing Service authorized by the Korean government (Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism).
It adheres to CEFR, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, assessing the authentic proficiency of the Korean language.
Unlike TOPIK, there is only one paper for KLPT.
All applicants take the same set of questions, and the score you get determines your grade/level.
There are FOUR levels, namely KLAT Novice / Beginners KLAT, i.e., B-KLAT (grade 1 to 2), KLAT Intermediate (grade 3 to 4), and KLAT Advanced (grade 5 to 6).
TOPIK seems to be more recognized, accepted, and appropriate for academic goals.
Benefits of the Korean Language Test
The Korean proficiency test is beneficial for obvious reasons. They can be proof of competence for job applications involving Korean and advanced studies in Korea.
You can demonstrate your Korean proficiency level by giving the language test TOPIK since these certifications provide job seekers and employees a competitive advantage.
Thus, it is an exceptional asset to include on your resume.
Documentary proof of the Korean language test certificate added to other requirements will put you on your way to a smooth interview process.
The test result will somehow restrict the interviewer on the types of questions you are supposed to answer. Instead of asking you about things like “what is an umbrella called in Korean.”
It is most likely that you would instead be asked, “what level did you attain in TOPIK?”
It is as a result of your Korean language test certification included in your qualifications.
Are you planning to study in South Korea?
The Government of South Korea offers KGSP (Korean Government Scholarship Program) to deserving students to promote international exchange in education and mutual friendship amongst participating countries.
TOPIK certification is a prerequisite for such a scholarship.
Besides, these diplomas are recognized and accepted by Korean universities and Educational institutions for undergraduate entry as well as for postgraduate admission.
TOPIK is vital if you plan to apply for permanent residency or look for a working visa in South Korea. It is useful in the ‘Korea Immigration and Integration Program’ (KIIP) operated by the Ministry of Justice.
The KIIP program comprises two halves: Korean language training and Understanding Korean Society.
There are few more advantages like boosting one’s confidence, traveling to Korea, and confirming your Korean proficiency level.
It can translate into developing your personality at a career and social transitioning level.
TOPIK Exam Structure (Pass Mark)
TOPIK Levels
TOPIK has three different categories of testing, namely, beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. There are a total of 6 levels.
TOPIK I is the elementary level test containing two sublevels grades (Level 1 and Level 2).
On the other hand, TOPIK II is the combined intermediate/advanced level with four sublevels (Level 3, Level 4, Level 5, and Level 6).

Validity
TOPIK and EPS-TOPIK results are valid for two (2) years from the time of test result announcements. I’d understand if the validity were longer, like 5-10 years, but two years is relatively less.
I have studied Japanese for more than a year and learned over 500 Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Today, I might not remember even 200.
It is because if one does not practice and read enough, one will forget the most in a couple of years.
I’m sure there must be some genuine reason for 2-year validity!

I have applied for an English taught program at Inha University, so there is an option between topik level 3 and IELTS. Which language certificate do you think is better to go with an online application? Also, topik level 3 means we should write topik II as topik II has lv 3,4,5,6. So can we choose only lvl 3 and leave lvl 4,5,6?
I haven’t checked, but I doubt as both exams are for different purposes. Most likely, you need IELTS 5.5 or above and a minimum TOPIK level 3 (3rd level out of 6 total). You can confirm from the university.
What majors can we opt for after studying mbbs in India? Can you provide all types of majors that we can opt for? Thank you.
I don’t have much knowledge about the medical field.
Sir, I want to study in a Korean college and in university and after that, I want to set up my own business in Korea. So, which TOPIK exam should I give and at which age?
Most Korean universities don’t require TOPIK scores, while some ask for level 3/4. So, it depends where you’re applying.
Is there any educational consultant for South Korea in Chennai? Pls, let us know the address.
I’m sure there must be many, but I don’t track them. You can start with the Inko Centre.
Hello sir,
Is it okay to take TOPIK II without taking TOPIK I?
You can if you’re well prepared.
Hello sir
I’m currently studying BSC nursing and for my further studies, I want to go to South Korea. Is it necessary to take the topik test? Or will it be okay to have IELTS certificate as I wanted to apply for scholarship programs there.
Thank you
In most cases, you need an IELTS score, and TOPIK is not mandatory. For scholarship, you have to read the guidelines. It depends on many factors, and your existing academic qualifications play an important role.
I want to do MBA After My BFM Degree In Korea through KGS scholarship. Is TOPIK Exam will be helpful for me even though my marks are Less than 80%.
TOPIK will be beneficial, but it plays a limited role in the overall selection.
So do I. Even I want to do MBA in South Korea.
Good luck 🙂
I am working as an SAP ABAP Programmer in Mumbai. I am planning to learn a language. I have narrowed down two of them: 1. Japanese and 2. Korean… Please guide me with the same. which language to choose?
Already replied on another blog.
It’ll be really helpful if you could suggest some textbooks for this exam, and can you also explain how that textbook would be as in English to Korean? Also, is it possible to get a translator job after taking this test? If yes, then how should I apply for it?
There is no specific book. You can try any set of books that can help you prepare. I’d also suggest taking help from a teacher. I’ll write soon about resources. Once you complete V or VI levels, you will be eligible to apply for translator jobs offered by many organizations.
Sir, can you also tell me that how do I apply for the scholarship. And what should I write, and how should I write the personal statement section.
That won’t be possible to answer in a few lines. You can read their guideline or wait for my scholarship article in 1-2 months.
Korean
Sure.
Hi Sir, is it mandatory to get a topik certificate to enter into Korean university as an undergraduate?
Not mandatory if your course will be in 100% English. But it is beneficial, especially if you wish to work there during or after your studies.
Hello sir, I am a commerce student of Class 12 and I want to go to Korea to study at a university. Can you please enlist the courses for business? How do I get to a university there without topik?
I have started covering all topics related to Korean and Korea one-by-one on JoyofKorean.com. Your question requires lots of detail, and hopefully, I’ll write soon. You can check that blog.
Hi sir, I am a science student and now I am in 11th standard and my dream is to study in SNU for my further studies. Can I get admission to SNU As an undergraduate? If yes, sir can you just briefly tell me the undergraduate process for SNU admission. (Sir can you also suggest which one is better to study in Korea as an undergraduate or postgraduate).
You can get admission. But it is not an easy decision. You have to consider various factors like budget, your family support, post-course opportunity, language proficiency. You also need a minimum TOPIK level 3 or IELS 6.0 or higher for SNU. You can apply either on your own or through any consultant agency.
Sir, I am pursuing an M.Tech 2nd year. I am going to apply for a Ph.D. in biotechnology in S.Korea through GSK. But I dont have any Korean language certificate like a topik certificate. However, they dont mention that Korean language certificates is mandatory. So I want to know whether not having this certificate affects the screening process?
Yes, TOPIK is not compulsory for GSK, but it gives an edge to your profile and boosts overall chances.
Can I get a scholarship with a diploma in the Korean language without topik?
The Korean language alone is not sufficient to get a scholarship.
Sir, I am currently doing my bachelor’s degree in electronic and communication engineering. I want to pursue my master’s degree in Korean. I want to know the process of it and a suggestion should I pursue master in electronic and communication engineering or something else and I also want to know about after my bachelor what exam should I go for it.
Thank you.
Without previous knowledge (advanced level) in Korean, it is not possible to get admission for MA in Korean. You can still learn through part-time courses in one of the learning centers.
Hello sir,
When will the registration for TOPIK 1 exam start this year? I read that due to covid the exam on 11th April 2021 is cancelled but when they are going to reschedule. And how do we have to register for the exam?
They haven’t updated yet. It is difficult to say whether it will reschedule or not. And there will be one test on 17th October 2021, for which registration will start in Aug 1st week.
Providing mail address for Manipur TOPIK center is not found.
You can email them info[at]manipuruniv.ac.in, or call them.
Sir I am currently doing B.Com hons and planning to do CA after it. Will this test help to find a better job in the field of CA and increase my chances to travel in Korea?
Not much. CA is usually a country-specific. So, what you study about Indian taxation and the financial laws, won’t be useful in Korea.
Sir please I want to ask that after passing the eps-topik exam, which visa I need to apply for and will I get an invitation letter from Korea for the job and how many days I can work in Korea. Can you send the answer to my email? Thank you. Sorry for bad English.
For these questions, you need to consult any overseas job consultant or Korean embassy.
Thanks, sir for your reply.
Hello sir, I’m studying in the 12th so can I apply for kgsp? And how many years does it take to complete TOPIK level 1?
Yes. You can clear level 2 of TOPIK-I in 12-18 months, but the duration depends on your learning approach.
Sir, I have a question to ask. Does the KGSP form also act as an admission form for the university to write in the KGSP form? Do I need to apply for admission separately? Please reply sir and which website should I visit to get the information about the TOPIK exam for 2021.
Both are different. First, you take the TOPIK exam. Once you pass it, you can add the score on the form, along with the document of the TOPIK certification.
This is the website where you can find all the information 🙂 You can also check JoyofKorean, where I’ll write many things about Korean.
Hello sir,
I am finishing my Bcom studies. I have learned elementary level korean language to speak, write, read. I am aiming to acquire a job as a translator or interpreter in Korean embassy in India or Indian Embassy in Korea. Is Topik exams enough for that or should I do a diploma in that language?
please do guide me
Yes, TOPIK is sufficient for all jobs requiring Korean. Aim for level 5 or 6.
Hello sir I did my bachelor’s in computer science. So, for my master’s, I want to apply to Korea for Korean literature. Is it possible without knowing the advanced level of Korean? I can apply or not. Or should it necessary to topik test for masters in Korean literature? If I do master in my core like a computer engineer. So that’s not important to take the topik test. Can you please clear my confusion about this? Thanks
I’m not sure, but I believe it is not possible to seek MA in Korean literature without holding advanced fluency in Korean. For M.Sc, TOPIK is not compulsory, but knowing some will make your life easy there. You can first choose the course and university and then check the eligibility criteria for the same.
Hello sir,
I just want to know about the criteria for the TOPIK exam?
There aren’t any major criteria. Anyone who has Korean language knowledge can take the test.
Hello sir,
I am studying in 12th std (science). Recently I am learning the Korean language from online apps. I want to go to South Korea to study after the 12th. So is there any need to give TOPIK exam?
While TOPIK score is an added advantage, but the requirement depends on your chosen Univesity. In most cases, you need an IELTS or TOEFL score if the mode of instruction is English.
Yes sir even I’m a science student. Sir, would you suggest if it’s okay to study in Korea as an undergraduate or postgraduate?
Postgraduate is usually better as you have more experience and can take maximum advantage. You will also save money in UG.
Yes. me too. Will u give topik this year?
Is it possible to directly sit for topik 2 intermediate exam without getting certification for topik 1 beginner?
Yes.
Hello sir. There is this course under Delhi University, MA in East Asian Studies. Do you have any knowledge about the course and the scope of it? It would be helpful if you could share your thoughts regarding it if you know. Thank you.
Yes, the syllabus focus on various aspects of East Asian countries like Japan, China, and Korea. You also have to pick one language between 3, and language is just a small part. It is not the same as an MA in Korean.
I’m currently pursuing Ba.llb, and I want to do my master’s in SK. How should I apply for it? Do I need to take TOEFL or TOPIK? Also, what major should I choose for my Master’s? And also can you suggest some textbooks for these tests.
You have to choose the college and course and apply accordingly as per their requirements. You may need to clear English tests. TOPIK is optional, but some Universities do require it. So, it depends. I’d suggest consulting any overseas study agency that deals with study in Korea.
Hi Sir,
Since the TOPIK scores expire within two years, I was wondering if there is any other protocol to follow/test to give if I want to become a Korean Language translator. How would I go about this?
Thank you for all the information!
Not really. You only need it for your 1st job. After that, the experience will matter more. And if there is any requirement for the latest certification, one has to take the test. But that would be rare.
Hello, I have done BCom then MBA recently. Now I got to know that I am interested in learning East Asian languages, especially in Korean second preference is Japanese, and I wanted to do a BA in any one of these languages.
I know JNU is the best option, and at the same time, it is hard to get admission. I want to know the best university or college options for Korean and Japanese and Chinese. I wanted to do jobs as a translator or teacher else. Can you tell me what the best options are available? Is Jamia Millia Islamia University a good option for BA in Korean, and is it hard to get admission in this? Do I need special classes for the JNU entrance exam or can I do this by self-study and what books I can go through? Please help me out with this.
Since you have already completed UG and PG, you don’t need to do a BA and maybe MA to learn a language. You can do that through any good public or private institutions. If you still wish, you can check the entire list – BA foreign language course. The admission is either based on 12th marks or entrance.
Sir, I am a second-year English Literature student who wishes to do a master’s in South Korea. How can I enroll in a good University? What all qualifications do I need to have to apply for the same successfully?
That depends on the course and university you’re seeking. You should first shortlist and check the eligibility criteria and admission timeline. For example, you might need an IELTS score for many such programs. TOPIK can also be beneficial though it might not be obligatory.
Hello sir, I want to study Korean culture and language in Korea. Is there any scholarship program for that?
Yes. GKS is one such option.
Sir, I’m currently doing B.com, and I want to study for my master’s in South Korea. Can I prepare for the TOPIK exam at Inko centre in Chennai? And can you tell me about the fee structure of Inko centre, Chennai?
Yes, Inko Center is an excellent choice for studying Korean and preparing for TOPIK. The price may not be the same since the time they stopped offering offline classes due to COVID-19. You can contact them for the latest fees, but it will be affordable.
Hello Sir, I’m currently pursuing an MBA and want to join the Korean language program in Korea itself. I want to apply for KGSP also. Will this help me, and can you give me any tips related to this topic?
You can check if your target program is available under GKS 2021. Then, as per criteria and requirements, you can apply for it. It is a vast topic, and I’ll cover it intensively soon.
Hey, even I’m doing an MBA and wanna do a Korean language course. Can we talk regarding this? and I guess it would be helpful for both of us !!
I’m soon starting something that will be about only Korean. Probably, in February!
Good evening sir. I’m a B.sc nursing 2nd student. I want to do a job in South Korea. And I also want to study M.Sc nursing in S. Korea. Is the TOPIK exam useful for me? And without this exam, which exam is suitable for me to do a nursing job in South Korea? Please help me, sir. 🙏🙏
Yes, TOPIK or a similar test like KLPT is essential to get a job in South Korea. In fact, one needs a good command of Korean.
Sir, I want to pursue bachelors in mass communication in Korea in English. So, which exam should I give to increase my chances of admission to the university? Topik or IELTS?
If the mode of teaching is English, then you need IELTS or TOEFL score. For example, the SNU requires a minimum level of iBT 80 for TOEFL or IELTS 5.5 for the bachelor’s program. The requirement of TOPIK varies. Some don’t need it, whereas some demand at least a minimum level of 3/4 of the TOPIK. You can check the e-prospectus of various Colleges. However, some knowledge is great to enjoy and live a comfortable life in Korea. Later, when you reach Korea, you can improve it further through real conversational and some add-on elective Korean courses at the target university.
Hello sir, i am a second-year student of accounting and finance. After my graduation, I want to apply for TOPIK, so it that ok to do so? Because want to do the job in South Korea
Yes, you can take TOPIK whenever you want, provided that you’re are prepared for the test.
I am a 12th student of commerce, but sir, I want to take admission in a theater course at Korean National University in Performing Arts after the 12th. If I give the TOPIK exam. Then what the next procedure? And sir, I really want to ask, what is the GKS 2021 scholarship exam procedure? And do they offer any scholarships for the performing arts? If so, what is next? If they do not, then for which course do they offer scholarships? Please let me know what the following procedure is? Sir, I really want your help! I really want to get admission in this year 2021.
Well, these days, due to time constraints, I’m not tracking GKS 2021. So, difficult to give any meaningful advice. But I guess the procedure would be the same as in 2020. You can check the official document to get some clarification about the entire process. As far as the bachelor program at KNU is concerned, you have to check with the University about the eligibility criteria. In most cases, TOPIK is not compulsory when the medium of teaching is English, but it is an added advantage.
Sir, I’m recently studying in class 11. And I want to know that whether by TOPIK exam will there be scope for art like drawing sketching fashion designing. I want to be an artist, and I am also learning Korean. So can I be able to do that by this exam?
In India, TOPIK won’t play an essential role in your current academic pursuit. Also, TOPIK certification expires in 2 years. So, you might not be able to take advantage of it then. If you like Korean, you can surely learn regardless of the opportunities you get with it.
Hi Sir! I had lots of doubts regarding TOPIK. Please clear them for me. I will complete my M.Pharmacy by June 2021. I really want to work in South Korea. I didn’t have any Korean classes which give me certification of completion. However, I have access to Coursera’s course organized by Yonsei University. It will provide me with a certificate of completion if I enroll in it. Does that make me eligible to give the TOPIK exam? What else is needed to make me eligible for applying for a job after an M.Pharmacy degree in South Korea?
Anyone can give the TOPIK exam. The only thing you need is knowledge of the Korean language as per TOPIK levels. As far as jobs in Korea are concerned, you need to find the positions that fit your profile and apply accordingly. Since the requirement varies, it is difficult to suggest any specific thing.
Thank you for replying sir, this means I dont really need a certificate to be eligible for applying for TOPIK. Thank you so much.
Sir, I’m a 12th class student, and I wish I should work in Korea in the future like doing a job or a master’s degree in Korea. So, how much level is required for of topik exam? Is it necessary to clear 6 levels or?
That is quite subjective. The requirement varies and it depends on the job and the course you’re seeking. In some cases, TOPIK is not needed, but the ability to speak Korean helps in Korea.
Hello, sir. I’m interested to pursue Masters in Marketing under GKS 2021. I’ve heard that the embassy prefers students from reputed institutes over the ones from non-reputed. Is this true?
They don’t disclose the exact criteria. However, that could be a possibility to some extent, but they consider multiple factors before granting scholarship to a selected few.
Hello Sir!
Sir, if I get into a job in Korea after completing my TOPIK exam within the validity period and then when the validity period expires that is after two years, do I again need to appear for the TOPIK exam in my country? Also, can the companies there really ask the employees to do the exam again even after reaching level 6 just because the period has expired?
That depends on the company. Usually, it is required if you’re applying for a new job where Korean knowledge is necessary. Once you get the job, you don’t need to appear for the test again. However, if you are applying to another organization or want Korean to be officially counted, you have to take it again. You can take TOPIK in Korea or wherever it is feasible for you.
Sir, I want to apply for jobs in Korea after completing my Master’s in Computer Science from India. Should I give the TOPIK exams? Since there is no ESP-TOPIK exam in India. And if we reach level 6 of TOPIK till what time is it valid?
That is quite subjective. For many jobs, TOPIK is not required, but some companies demand it. But regardless of requirement, it is always beneficial to learn Korean if you’re planning to work in Korea. TOPIK certificate is valid for 2 years from the time of the test result announcement.
Thank you, For the information about the TOPIK examination. I’m an engineering student who is also fond of learning new languages. I chose Korean because I was very much interested in their cultural practices, food, the country’s development, music (K-pop), and much more. I wanted to learn just because it was so good to pronounce and speak, and then when I learned more and more about their culture, I was really interested to go work in Korea. Apart from my technical skills, learning Korean additionally was a boon to my decision. This information really helped me in confirming my decision to work in Korea. Thank you!
Great. I’m glad you liked it. I wish you the very best of luck with your future endeavors, Keerthi 🙂
Hello sir, I am a class 9 student. I want to become a translator in the future. So, can you guide me on how can I start? I want to learn different languages and not only Korean. So, how can I start? And is the topik exam helpful for me?
First, choose a language. And to pick the right one, read about various languages, where it is spoken, and how useful they are in different scenarios. Then, start learning that language through a tutor, a learning center, or self-study like books, apps, and online resources. Concentrate on one language at a time, and move to the second one only once you achieve the upper-intermediate level in the 1st one.
TOPIK exam is beneficial, but it has a validity of only two years. You can still take the test to gauge your Korean knowledge.
Tysm sir. I have one more question. Do we need to choose a certain field like medical or something where we can work as a translator?
Not really. But with years of experience, you will be more specialized in certain domains. It will depend on the type of translation you do in the first few years.
I have completed my Master recently and am willing to do a Ph.D. in life sciences from South Korea. I don’t know what are the prerequisites for the same. Is TOPIK necessary to apply?
The requirement varies, but you should generally expect to hold a good command over Korean. If your research demand some Korean skills, you may be asked to take TOPIK level 3 or above.
Hello Sir. My name is Mahder and I am an Ethiopian student pursuing my bachelor’s degree in India. Can I take the TOPIK exam in India for the GKS program?
You can take the TOPIK exam. To my knowledge, there is a country-wise quota for the GKS scholarship. Therefore, I’m not sure if that is possible for you as a Non-Indian.
Yes, Sir, there is a quota for country-wise. But for GKS, does it matter where I took the TOPIK exam? And can non-Indians take the exam in India?
Yes, for GKS, it doesn’t matter where you take the test. While I’m not sure, but I guess you can take the TOPIK exam in India. You can check with the Korean cultural center in New Delhi.
Hello sir. I wish to do my PG in Korea after completing my UG (B.com) in India. Should I have to write any entrance exams to get qualified by Korean universities? And what are certificates that are needed to apply for admission to Korean universities?
It depends on the university, type of course, and stream. First, choose the subjects and program, and then make a list of the Universities offering these courses. Then, you can check the eligibility criteria and admission procedure. The websites are in English. So, you won’t face any difficulties. Finally, you can apply as per the details and dates.
Another option is to contact an overseas study consultant that deals with Colleges in South Korea. Good luck Harshini!
Thank you so much sir.
Hi, Can I take topik 1 – low beginners and high beginners on the same day?
I guess No since both levels of TOPIK 1 is conducted at the same time and day.
Good evening sir, I am going to take a fashion designing course at Coimbatore college. After finishing my first degree, is it possible to do my second degree in fashion designing in Seoul by doing a part-time job? And what are all the procedures for studying there and doing a part-time job, sir? Please reply.
After completing the UG degree course, you can pursue a Masters from South Korea. Yes, you can since the Korean universities provide the option for students to work part-time when their course is in session.
But sir, you just mentioned there that TOPIK -I is conducted in the morning and TOPIK-II is conducted in the afternoon.
Yes, they conduct two sublevels of TOPIK-I in the morning, and level 3 to 6 of TOPIK-II is offered in the morning and afternoon, including a break.
Sir, if someone is unable to come to the different cities for the exam, is there any option to clear it online?
No. All TOPIK exams are conducted only at the authorized test centers.
Sir, currently I don’t plan to study or work in Korea but I am learning Korean as a personal interest. Can I take the TOPIK exam for certification?
Yes, of course. However, TOPIK results are valid for two years after the announcement of examination results.
Sir, thank you for your ideas. But sir, after getting all the topik certificate, will it expire? Can we use it for a scholarship?
Yes, TOPIK result and score report is valid for two years from the time of the test result announcement. Once it has expired, you have to take again to officially count. Yes, it is beneficial for the scholarship.
Hello Sir, I want to know when the TOPIK exam is held in November. Please tell me, sir. I really want to give a TOPIK exam. And I also want to what is the registration process. Please reply to me.
Due to the spread of COVID-19, The November 2020 test have have been canceled. The exam is usually held in April and October. When the registration starts, you can apply online or by visiting one of the centers. Do remember, there is only 5 TOPIK test centers in India.
Hello sir. How many months earlier should I have to register for the TOPIK exam, and I’m going to do (PG) MBA in Korea. Should I have to write TOPIK exam sir?
First, you have to check the concerned University if they need the TOPIK score and what levels. I’m assuming you are going to pursue the course in English, thus, you may or may not need it. Usually, the test is held in April and October in India, and you can apply in Feb/August. And most importantly, you have to learn Korean to a certain level before applying for TOPIK.
Sir, I would like to know if it’s possible if I self-study and able to crack the TOPIK exam? I’m currently self-studying for around 3 months as I’m trying to apply for my master’s program in South Korea. Kindly let me know the scholarships that can be availed and your insights about taking the TOPIK after only self-studying.
Yes, possible, but learning through a teacher is usually better. Perhaps, you can try the 1st level of TOPIK next year to assess your Korean ability. You can check the 2021 Global Korea Scholarship (GKS).
Sir,
Generally, how much time does it take for TOPIK results to release?
Usually, 6-8 weeks.
Hello sir,
I don’t know much about the topik exam. But I want to know the syllabus for the TOPIK Test for the preparation.
TOPIK-I (Level 1 and 2) has two sections – Reading and Listening whereas, TOPIK II (Level 3 to 6) comprises 3 sections – Reading, Writing, and Listening.
The 1st level consists of elementary activities like day-to-day conversations, greeting, introduction, ordering, buying, and simple sentences from 800 basic words. The word limit and situational topics will increase as per levels. You can also check on the official TOPIK website for all the details.
Hello sir ,
I want to know the dates for the TOPIK exam. I am not able to find it online. When will they conduct the level-1 and level-3 exam?
November 2020 exam was canceled. For 2021, they will announce the dates later. Usually, the TOPIK test is conducted in April and October in India.
Thank you so much sir for the information.
Sir, how many Indian students apply for the kgsp every year?
While there is no official figure, but based on popularity, I feel the number would be quite high.
Is it more than 1000 applicants?
I think so.
Hello sir, I am a student of class 9th and I wish to continue my studies in Korea after 10th standard. So please help with this thing because I don’t know what will be the basic requirements for this process. And as I will have to give the topik exam, so can I directly give the required level exam first, to apply for the school I wish to go to? Thank you, sir, for the above details that were really helpful for me.
Unless there is some compulsion that I don’t know, Why do you want to study in Korea after the 10th? Don’t go just for the love of KDrama and KPop. Reality is far different from K-Movies. You should at least complete 12th with good marks. To live a comfortable life, you also need a good command over Korean, and that will easily take a few years. Plus, you also need your parents’ approval and lots of money for your education there.
Sir, my name is Vaishnavi, and I’m in intermediate now. I’m planning to apply for the AMA scholarship. So, is it important to write the topik test? Please give me some suggestions about the scholarship and tell me that is Seoul safe for traveling alone? I desperately want that scholarship. Please reply to me, sir and do some research about the AMA scholarship program and explain it, sir. I’m waiting for your reply, sir.
Long back, I started this blog only to cover in-depth articles related to various languages. Until now, thankfully, I have maintained the same. Scholarship, study or work abroad are altogether different topics and have limited correlation with languages. It requires an enormous time to research, write, update, and reply to thousands of comments, emails, and messages. Also, I prefer writing a detailed article that answers most of the questions. Being a single author and my professional work, it isn’t an easy task. I have a good plan to solve this, and I’ll hopefully, cover this topic in early 2021.
It’ll we really helpful if update this news of topik date, fees, etc. for upcoming years also because I’m really into doing this language course in 2024-25??????. Thanks for such useful info.
I’m updating since 2017/2018. Hopefully, I will continue doing it for many years to come. 🙂
Sir, I’m doing self-study. Can I apply for this exam? Please answer. Asap!
Yes.
Hello, I want to study for a master’s in physiotherapy in Incheon, Inha University. Can you please let me know till what level will I have to give TOPIK exam? And is there any college exam I’ll have to give? Please help me out!
For that, you have to contact the University. Only they can update you about the TOPIK requirement. Some Universities don’t need TOPIK scores. Since the course is taught in English, thus, they might ask for English proficiency tests like IELTS or TOEFL.
What about scholarships? TOPIK exam is compulsory, right?
TOPIK is not compulsory for the KGSP scholarship. However, every Korean scholarship has its own set of rules. Some require, and some don’t. You should check the guidelines before applying.
Do we need to complete both the level of TOPIK to enter a university in South Korea? Also for kgsp?
Not really. The requirement varies from one university to another. Also, for KGSP scholarship, TOPIK is just one of the several criteria, and it isn’t compulsory to attain a higher level though it might boost your profile to some extent.
Hello sir,
I am planning to apply for ARTS next year. I want to give a TOPIK level 1. Can you suggest to me how can I crack above 140 in level 1? I need to get at least level 2 for which I need to score above 140/200.
For that, you have to contact any Korean teacher or read some preparation guide about the TOPIK syllabus.
Sir, can we give TOPIK after doing a scratch course?
Yes, you can start with beginners level 1.
Oh! That’s great, sir. I will join the scratch course soon. Thank you so much, sir, for helping me out with the issues.
Sir, is it necessary to study the Korean language in Korean cultural classes as I can’t afford the classes. So, can I learn it from youtube, etc? Still, I can attend the test or even I need a proper institution to study Korean, and then only I can take the test?
Please guide me. I am a 12th class bio student. What should I do? I want to give this test for the scholarship of undergraduate. On the KGSP site, it is only mentioned that only TOPIK passed students will be given priority. In TOPIK 1, I have to give both levels of papers together. Sir, do you know any person who can guide me for the kgsp 2021 for undergraduate?
Please, sir, I would be grateful to you if you can help me. And thank you, sir, for your above-provided information. It was very helpful to me.
No. It is not mandatory to study at a particular educational institution. You can learn the way you want. Regardless of how you study Korean, you can take the TOPIK exam.
YouTube can be an additional resource, but it cannot replace the proper language learning approach. Perhaps, you can try an affordable institute or online Korean teachers. You can also try some books, podcasts, online study materials, and video lessons. Possibilities are abundant.
As far as KGSP 2021 is concerned, It is quite a vast and different topic. It would be unfair to cover only a few points and missing many vital aspects. But based on demand, I will cover in detail in the future. I’ve planned some exciting things related to the Korean language. Watch this space 🙂
Sir, do you know any person who can guide me up for kgsp? Any professor or any person who can help in some doubt about B.SC in Korea. Please, sir.
Not any particular person. You can read the document related to KGSP on the website.
Hello Sir.
I want to learn the Korean language. Can you tell me where should I learn or from where should I start as there are plenty of videos scattered on YouTube? It will be very helpful if you can suggest me. The people here who have learned please do suggest me.
You can join one of the nearest Korean learning centers. For example, the Korean culture center offers Korean courses in Delhi, Chennai, and Patna. There are many Colleges and private institutes offering various Korean courses. You can check the article where I have listed 30 top Korean educational institutes in India.
Good afternoon sir, I am currently in class 12th. I am PCMB student but I want to pursue fashion designing in South Korea. So, I wanted to ask that when should I enroll for the test and can I get job there?
Have you already decided on the College where you want to study? Also, many colleges don’t require TOPIK scores. It is a vast topic, and it would be better to contact any study abroad consultant that deals with Education in South Korea.
Sir, I’m very much interested in the Korean language. I want to study in Korean University in the future. Sir, can you please tell me, that how many levels in TOPIK test I have to complete, for KGSP.
TOPIK is not the only criterion to earn KGSP scholarships, but it definately improves the chances. The higher level of TOPIK is usually better. Aim for at least level 3. Those who have already completed levels 5 or 6 at the time of applying are exempt from the one-year Korean course at the Korean University.
Sir, I’m a 2-year physiotherapist student from thane. I very much would like to study for masters (pg) in Korea. Can you please suggest how to get admission and what are the requirements to study as a pg student?
This is quite a vast and different topic. It would be better to contact any overseas studies consultant dealing with PG courses in South Korea. They will able to help you in a better way.
Which South Korean university has a master of physiotherapy course? Please can you tell me?
I haven’t checked all the courses offered by various Korean Universities. So, I don’t have enough knowledge about this program.
I know and I read the available centers for giving the test in India. I know this isn’t going to do anything, but I am still just writing it here as a suggestion. The will to learn Korean in India has increased over the last 2-3 years immensely. Even the recent article about India choosing to include Korean in its second language program has mentioned it.
The number of people willing to take the test has increased. But there’s a lack of centers. In places like Mumbai, Thane, Kolkata, Bangalore, you’ll find thousands who want to give the exam. I’m writing this on behalf of other people as well. It’s just a suggestion, but there’s really a need for more centers. The demand isn’t meeting the supply.
I really hope it happens in the future. People are waiting for this to happen too and are serious about it because it’s related to their career path.
I appreciate your thought. But organizing an international exam takes lots of effort, collaboration, manpower, and need to follow plenty of strict guidelines. This is not just with Korean, but nearly with all the foreign languages. The only exceptions are French and German because of their massive organizational presence in India for the past 5-7 decades. For example, Spanish and Japanese are quite popular, but there are only 6 and 8 test centers in India. Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian have merely 1-3.
Most likely, they will add Bangalore as the 6th TOPIK center. I believe Mumbai should also be on the list. Also, unlike other exams that are valid for life, TOPIK has validity for only 2 years.
Sir,
I’m in my first year of btech in computer science engineering. Can I give topik to get admission in the Engineering University of South Korea as an exchange student for 3 years? (I know topik scores are valid for 2 years only). Also, will the high scores in the topik exam provide scholarships?
I’m not aware of any scholarship based on the TOPIK exam. Also, there are 6 levels of TOPIK, and it takes a while to reach the upper-intermediate level. Perhaps, you can try Global Korea Scholarship 2021 program. You can find details when they will announce in early 2021.
Ok, thank you, sir.
I want to become a foreign language teacher and pre-primary school teacher in the Netherlands/Germany. I am studying German now B1 level. Until which level should I finish? Also, I want to become a Korean language Teacher, in which University should I do the course. Which course? I want to do it in a Korean University. Help me.
The question is too complex to answer in a few lines.
Hello, I am an architecture student and I wanted to apply for a master’s in animation, in Korea. The university I contacted is Sejong university, and they said that I can apply for the spring semester and I will have to take TOPIK. So my question is, when do I give the test, and what month does the spring semester start in Korea, and also can you suggest any colleges with the master’s program in animation.
Thank you.
Spring session typically starts in February or March. Since November 2020 TOPIK exam has been canceled, thus, you can only take the next test in April 2021 (most likely). I haven’t checked many colleges for higher studies in South Korea. Perhaps, I will write on the same going forward.
Sir,
I have a two-part question to ask, I was wondering what the deadlines for the 2021 GKS applications are and whether I would require both TOPIK as well as IELTS certification to apply for an undergraduate degree?
For 2021, they will publish all details and timeline later. For the requirements and eligibility, you can read their guidelines. It is a vast and separate topic. Maybe I will write sometime in the future.
I plan on taking the TOPIK exam after completing my third year, which will take another 6 months. But I stay in Mumbai, and there are no centers here. Is there no way for me to take the test?
No. You can only take TOPIK at authorized test centers.
Hello sir,
I’m currently learning Spanish and Korean. I have already completed my Certificate course in Spanish and would apply for the Diploma course this year, but because of COVID, it’s on a break right now. Though, I regularly study it myself.
I never learned Korean from any institute, as convincing my parents for letting me learn just one language was tough. So, I’ve been studying Korean by myself for a few months. I’m dedicated to both languages, just a bit more inclined towards Korean. I have B.com (hons) degree, so I’m not aiming for doing another bachelor’s degree. I want to become a translator/interpreter. What are the qualifications required to be done, especially in the embassy of the Republic of Korea? Or in the embassy of India, situated in Korea? Will TOPIK be enough? How much experience do I need to have before applying? And thank you for saying that it takes years to attain a 4-5th level of proficiency, because I thought, maybe I’m slow.
I’m studying Korean through the “Korean From Zero” book, I have already completed the First 2 books, along with multiple revisions. What more do I need to do? Computer courses? Learn typing? If I want to become a translator/interpreter in an MNC, what are the qualifications there? Would an MBA from IGNOU be enough? Or do I need to do something else?
Currently, I’m just focusing on improving my language skills, but I want to prepare beforehand, and I can’t find suitable answers on Google or through anyone else. Please reply, I’m waiting for it eagerly.
Thank You
If you wish to be Korean translator or interpreter, aim for TOPIK level 6. Since job opportunities are limited in the embassies, you can try in various MNCs. MBA is a splendid choice, but only if you enroll for a full-time regular course, and not like IGNOU.
Hello sir,
This year is my last year of graduation (B.tech). Can I apply for any exchange program in Korea? I have searched a lot but cannot understand the procedure and requirements. If I can apply for the exchange scholarship, then where and how to apply?
The last date is over for 2020. You can apply next year when the process starts. To understand the entire procedure and eligibility, you can read the 28-page document. → GKS.
Hello sir
I am a BA graduate and I am very interested in the Korean language and I want to work as a specialist in Korean in India. Should I learn Korean from Delhi university? Is it enough for my job?
And one more thing, sir, please tell me what is the scope of this language because many people tell me that Korean has very little scope in India. That’s why I am getting confused. I want to learn Korean, but I don’t have much information.
Kindly guide me, sir, I will be highly obliged of this act of your kindness.
Korean is a low-demand and low-supply language. It means opportunities are limited, but the number of Korean professional are also fewer in India.
Many people like Korean culture and wish to learn, but very few actually take regular courses. Most of them quit or lose interest after learning some basic things through self-study. If you are serious enough regarding career, enroll somewhere.
DU offers two types of Korea courses: A 3-year part-time advanced Diploma (Daulat Ram) or a 2-year full-time PG Advanced Diploma (Arts Faculty). Both are good choices. You can also consider KCC at Lajpat Nagar. I have written quite a few articles about Korean, and you can type Korean in the search bar at the top-right corner.
The TOPIK exam occurs twice in India, April, and October, but for example, if I need the score in September, to apply for colleges (as the deadline is in September). I can’t apply the April month TOPIK exam, as I have other exams in April, then is there any alternative I can do, is there anyway, the Korean embassy of India can help?
No. The exam dates are fixed for everyone. Also, TOPIK is not required for a vast majority of courses in Korea. So, you can check with the concerned College if you really need TOPIK certification.
Hello sir,
I am a 1st-year student of BFIA, and for further studies, i want to pursue MBA in South Korea. Sir for my admission I want to get a full-time scholarship from govt. But right now I couldn’t attend Korean language classes because of the pandemic. So, sir, I am planning to do all my studies online. I want to know that expect TOPIK is there any further exam i have to give to get admission to a Korean university and my plan for studying for a full-time scholarship is that right or do I need to consider more things?
Both English and Korean proficiency are accepted. There is no specific exam for the KGSP scholarship, but they take a few rounds of competitive interview. The eligibility criteria, available courses, and colleges vary every year, and all these conditions are set out by the Korean government.
hi sir.
I’m going to do apparel (fashion) designing in college and I want to go to Korea for this major. Is it compulsory for me to do the TOPIK exam? I know basic Korean (only to speak). If I have to do the TOPIK exam, where & from which book should I learn for the exam. As per the university application, I have to do it till TOPIK level 3. What type of question will be asked? is it basic sentences or all hard?
It depends on the University. If they are asking for TOPIK certification, then you have to take it. Remember, TOPIK has only 2-year validity. TOPIK level 3 is intermediate and covers reading, listening, and writing. You need a proper study plan to achieve it. Books alone won’t be enough. I’d suggest finding a Korean teacher or institute. They will provide you everything to help you achieve level III more efficiently.
Hi Sir I am Helan (PGT chemistry staff) and I have completed my masters in chemistry. I am currently pursuing my 2nd-year B.Ed. I am interested in the Korean language and willing to work in South Korea, so will it be possible to get a job in Korea if I clear the TOPIK exam?
Korean alone won’t help you get a job in South Korea. If there is any requirement open for foreigners and your skills are suitable for that position, you can apply.
Can I know the email Id of topik?
There is no specific email id. If you have any questions, you can ask here or get in touch with the nearest test center or KCC.
I live in Mumbai, where can I check for the TOPIK exams in Mumbai? How can I get study material for the same? I am very much interested in Hangul and Currently, I am learning from YouTube and Mobile apps.
There is no TOPIK test center in Mumbai and Maharashtra. You can buy some books online, or find any teacher (offline or virtual classes) who can help you with requisite study content.
Sir, I have never given the TOPIK test but I’m planning to get a level 3. Do I need to sit for level 1 and 2 TOPIK before giving level 3 or I can attempt level 3 without other levels?
You can directly give level 3 without taking 1 and 2.
Hi sir, will be an addition of a TOPIK centre in Bangalore?
I think Mumbai can be a better possibility since there is no test center on the Western side. South India already has two (Chennai and Hyderabad). But, Difficult to say. It all depends on demand and feasibility. Only they can decide.
Thank you for the information, Sir. Any school for learning Korean in Hyderabad?
There aren’t any good option to learn Korean in Hyderabad. You can try a 1-year certificate in Korean followed by a 2-years diploma and advanced diploma of Proficiency from EFL University.
Sir, what is the age limit for giving TOPIK and also, what level is required to be a tour guide in Korea?
There is no age limit for the TOPIK. While there is no specific requirement for a tour guide, but level V will be good enough. You may also need to take the linguist guide test conducted by IITTM if you need a license.
Hello sir, your knowledge is of great assistance. If you could suggest some online Korean learning sites or apps as I am from a small city in Rajasthan. I want to do Korean translation in India. Which level would be enough?
I am checking various online options for learning Korean. I will write in June. So, wait for a while. If you want to become a Korean translator, you require significantly higher levels of linguistic competence. Something like MA in Korean or TOPIK Level V or VI.
Are there any govt recognized institutes where I can get to learn Korean to pursue a career? I am from Mumbai. Kindly suggest.
To my knowledge, there is no institutes (Pvt. or Gov.) that offer Korean courses in Mumbai.
Sir, first of all, thanks a lot for this post. I’m a CMA final student (hopefully, I’ll be a Cost Accountant by the end of this year). I’ve searched on Google about job opportunities in Korea as a cost accountant, but I didn’t find anything satisfactory. Will sir, the 3rd level of TOPIK be enough to get a job there? Can I pass Topik exams by self-studying as I don’t have enough time for classes? (Sorry for the monotonous questions).
It isn’t easy to get a job in South Korea entirely based on academic qualifications. It would help if you had in-demand professions, fluency in Korean, experience, and available opportunity. If there is an absolute scarcity of homegrown talent, then it is possible. Otherwise, most companies will try to avoid foreign employees because of too many hassles such as compliance, Visa restrictions, lack of human interaction during the recruitment process and employment verification, and time-consuming for employes to get used to the Korean work environment. TOPIK can only add more value to your profile, but not enough to get a job there. Level 3 is lower intermediate, at least target for Level 4 or 5. You can achieve a beginner’s competency on your own, but beyond that, consider finding a teacher or join any Korean language institution.
Thank you, sir, for your kind and sincere words. From now, I’ll be more focused on developing my skills, and I’ll work hard to grab all opportunities. And I’ll try to join KL classes which run on weekends. Thanks again.
Wish you all the best.
I have almost finished one diary in Korean vocab and another for the rest of all things. I can do daily life conversations within 40 days. The way I was dreaming of going there, but by reading your message, it demotivated me almost to finish it up. I am doing Btech almost switched my mind to Korean lang. What do I do, sir?
There is nothing to be demotivated about anything. If your dream is to visit Korea, you can go anytime, even if you don’t speak a Korean word. But knowing the language makes the journey more fruitful. There are plenty of Indians living in South Korea, and not all of them Speak Korean.
If you have the interest, you can continue learning and also take TOPIK to gauge your level. If your purpose is to get a job in South Korea solely based on the Korean language, then, that would not be easy because everybody speaks Korean there. There are various other requirements, and only an overseas consultant can help you. This is not only for Korean but for every language. And, you can also get a Korean specialist job in India. Good luck!
Hello Sir! I have just started studying in 10th grade right now and am very interested in learning the Korean language as an additional skill. Due to the current circumstances of the world, learning through an institution and purchasing the study material won’t be possible. Could you suggest any good online courses that concur with the TOPIK syllabus and can help me start my journey? If I start studying during the month of May, when do you think I would be prepared to clear TOPIK 1?
I’m planning to write about the best Korean online courses, but that might take a few weeks to analyze all. TOPIK level 1 is a beginner level, and one can easily pass in 3-6 months. But do remember, TOPIK scores are only valid for 2 years.
Hello Sir,
Thanks for this information. I am a postgraduate student from statistics, this is my last semester and currently preparing for the banking exam and also learning the Korean language. I don’t know much about career options in this field. Please suggest me some, so I can start focusing on a particular option related to the Korean language.
As a Korean language expert, you can work in Korean companies or Indian businesses that deal with Korea. Besides, you can also work as a teacher, translator, interpreter, tour guide, or any jobs in MNC, export-houses, leisure industries that involve Korean. There are many possibilities. But for a vast majority of such employments, you need a higher level in Korean like TOPIK Level V or a long term course from any University or educational institution, and that will take a considerable amount of time, say a few years. Without possessing advanced proficiency, it is difficult to get any decent Korean job. You can consider all the factors before deciding to move your career towards Korean.
Sir, can you please update the dates of TOPIK exams in 2020 after corona?
The 69th TOPIK scheduled to be held on 12th April has been Postponed. Now, it will be held on 24th May 2020 (Sunday). LINK
Sir, I am an engineer pursuing B.Tech IT. 1) What is the minimum number of levels I should clear in TOPIK to get placed in an IT / Computer related company?
That depends on the nature of the work. If you wish to be a Korean language specialist, you should aim for TOPIK Level 5. If you want to work as an IT professional where Korean is just an addon/secondary skill, Level 3 is okay.
How long will it take to clear TOPIK level 3 sir?
That is quite subjective depending upon how you study, and how much time you spend.
Are there any short term courses?
Many institutes and Colleges offer short term programs. You can browse the list of Korean Courses in India.
Sir, I am a working professional and interested in the Korean Language. Can I do BA+MA from JNU as part-time or should I enroll myself for the language courses at the Korean culture centre?
JNU’s 5-year Integrated Masters is a full-time program. If you can clear the entrance test, then JNU is a great choice. Otherwise, you can try other options, including KCC.
Sir, I want to write Topik 2 exam in October 2020. So, when do I need to visit the center? During the registration period or earlier?
You can visit the nearest test center on 4th August when the registration starts.
Sir, I would like to pursue a doctorate in English literature at Seoul University. The application deadline is in February, but the TOPIK exam will only be in April. This being the case, will I still be eligible to apply for Seoul University?
I think it is better to contact the University. Besides, proof of Korean (TOPIK) might not be required since the course will be taught in English only. Check the eligibility criteria for international students on their site — LINK
Dear sir, first of all, I appreciate the information provided by you and your patient answer to all queries. My daughter appears in the Class XII board, and she is doing a course from Sejong Institute, Patna. She has already cleared Book 1 / Semester 1. She wants to pursue a full-time career in the Korean Language and wishes to do graduation first from JNU. I visited the JNU website also, but could not get much information. I want to know when is the entrance test, what is the pattern of exam, type of questions asked like GS, English, or Korean? Is there any advantage for those who have learnt Korean a bit before applying for the course? After graduation, she wants to pursue a master’s in Korea with some scholarships. Your guidance will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
D S Shekhar
1) You can find all the updated information related to JNU admission at JNU Korean Language Course. 2) No prior knowledge in Korean is required for BA since the entrance question paper is in English. 3) JNU and Korean Government (KGSP) offers some scholarship for a masters program in South Korea.
Hello Sir,
I was a B.com graduate in 2015, and I am working as a financial service executive for more than three years. I want to learn the Korean language by clearing all six levels so I can start looking for jobs available in Seoul. Will my graduation + TOPIK be sufficient for working there? I heard somewhere that when applying for work in Seoul requires four years of graduation, and we here only have three years. I’m waiting for a revert.
It will take a substantial amount of time to clear all 6 TOPIK levels. Maybe 4-5 years! Every job has a different requirement. So, it depends. Since you are going to spend lots of time learning Korean, why not pursue a Master’s degree simultaneously?
Sir, I am in my Twelfth standard right now which will end in March 2020 and the TOPIK exam will be conducted in April, so I think I can’t be prepared well to give the exam due to my boards. Also, I want to pursue a Korean honors degree from JNU after 12th. My question is that if I will do the exam which will be held in October as well, will I get more benefit from it or the honors from JNU can be enough. Because I want to be a Korean translator.
No. You don’t need to appear for the TOPIK exam if you planning to pursue a BA in Korean. The 5-year integrated BA and MA from JNU is enough to make a successful career as a Korean translator.
Sir, please tell me one thing that which is right ?” Any degree program which takes more than 4 years is not available under the KGSP scholarship program,
OR
Any degree program which takes more than 3 years is not available under the KGSP Scholarship program.
Sorry, I didn’t get you. You can read about the KGSP Scholarship 2020 — LINK
Are there any good Korean learning centers in Mumbai, and also is there is a test center in Mumbai?
No. There is no Korean institute or TOPIK test center in Mumbai.
Is the language test conducted online?
No. Only at 5 authorized test centers – Delhi, Chennai, Ranchi, Manipur, and Hyderabad.
Are there Centres in TamilNadu to learn Korean?

Hello sir, I would like to ask which books should I prefer to study for TOPIK level 1 and 2.
Maybe you can purchase these two books on amazon to cover beginners level — LINK1 and LINK2
Are there any websites where I can study vocabulary online? and also about Grammar.
It is better to join any Korean learning center. If you wish to learn on own or through online resources, then spend money on books, paid websites/apps, or online teachers. I’m not aware of any free resources worth to recommend. I might write about Korean resources in January.
Yes, please write about the resources. There are not any reliable Korean learning centers in Ahmedabad. Thank you.
I might write in Jan/Feb. 🙂
Hello Sir,
I also have a great interest in learning a foreign language and Korean is the first. What would be the best thing for me to begin with? At present, I’m preparing for the entrance exams because I am studying in 12th grade. I can read Korean fluently but can’t really understand what I read. I want to keep in touch with the language for the next 6 months, after which I can give my time to it. Please help me, sir.
Everything depends on your goal, and why you wish to learn Korean. The answer will vary depending on the reason, like a hobby, or full-fledged career, or just an additional skill. One can learn how to read Korean in just 4 days. It is too easy! However, to become a Korean interpreter, even 4 years are not enough. Take your time, read more, and think over it.
I would like to know whether the Korean language course started by IGNOU is effective? To what level it will teach me, i.e., whether it is just beginners or intermediate or advanced?
It covers only the beginner’s level. Online/Distance learning language programs are usually less effective. Explore some offline classroom courses.
Hello, sir Pawan here. Give me suggest some Korean diploma university in India. And give me your phone number / WhatsApp number sir, then i talk to you.
You can browse the entire list — Korean Programs. While it won’t be possible for me to talk on phone/WA, but you can always post a comment here or send an email.
Hello Sir, I’m studying engineering (final year). I want to work in Korea for that should I take test TOPIK [is it compulsory to attempt all the six levels] or EPS-TOPIK to get a job there? and I can read and write a Korean language but not enough understanding level, HOW much it takes time to speak Korean?
You need to appear for TOPIK Exam, and not EPS-TOPIK. The EPS-T is useful to work in Korea as EPS workers (like factory jobs). One can acquire the Hangul alphabet, and read & write some Korean in a few weeks. If, however, you aim to work in Korea or work as a Korean specialist, then target TOPIK Level 5, a prerequisite for most of the jobs where Korean language skill is needed. To pass level V and able to speak with natives, it will take 3-5 years. Learning Korean is a vital decision since it takes a considerable amount of time. Good Luck!
When is the next exam? I want to apply for that, but I am not getting where to do that? Should I need to go to Chennai or Hyderabad?
You need to contact the nearest TOPIK test center. Besides, you can also get in touch with the KCC in New Delhi. The contact details are mentioned in this article.
As per many, those people basic topik exam is enough to work in a factory, hotel, restaurant or manufacturing company. Please clear this thing for us.
For that, there is a different exam, i.e., EPS TOPIK (Employment Permit System). It is required for jobs at the factory, hotels, manufacturing industry, etc. The test is conducted once or twice every year, and there is no test centre in India. LINK
How do I register with TOPIK for the upcoming exam in October?
You can contact the nearest test centre or KCC in New Delhi.
Can I give topik 1 and 2 levels exam on the same day because the time for these tests is different?
I guess Yes if you’re confident enough.
Sir, my son is currently pursuing his studies in Korea. He has already cleared level 1 and 2. Though he has attempted the TOPIK II exam twice, the results were somehow not declared due to an administrative problem which poses a problem to his graduation. Can he take the test in India, will the results be announced on time?
The results are almost always declared on time. I don’t think TOPIK is compulsory if the course is taught in English. He can give the exam in India and can contact the Korean Cultural centre for the same. Also, The TOPIK exam is held 6 times in South Korea and only twice in India. So, even if he misses or not declared in Korea, he can give the next one in 2-3 months.
Hello sir, I am already learning Japanese and German language so I want to know that whether learning Korean will give an add on to my resume! And if I want to do it by self how can I do it.
The career possibilities can open up depending on your level of engagement with the language. The ability to speak one language fluently is better than acquiring elementary knowledge in 4 languages. In short, language skill is helpful only if you achieve Intermediate or higher level proficiency. I’d suggest picking one language between German, Japanese, and Korean, and stick to that one for the next few years. Whatever you decide, join any learning centre to achieve B2 (German) or N2 (Japanese) or Level 5 (Korean)! Self-study is not very effective beyond the beginner’s level. Read — Korean Courses in India.
Hi Sir,
Can you please tell me about the Jobs that I can apply for in India or Overseas after clearing Topik level 2?
TOPIK Level 2 is honestly not enough to fulfill any job requirement where Korean skill is mandatory. You should at least aim for Level 4 if not 5.
Thanks for answering my question. Please give your WhatsApp number sir so that I can ask Korean related things.
It will be difficult for me to respond to WA or Phone due to a busy schedule. You can ask through the comment section or send me an email. CONTACT
Sir is it possible to take student loan where we can pay after one-year completion of Korean language? I mean loan for just studying the language in Korea.
You can get a student loan for study abroad. Will it be all worth in the end? Well, only you can decide.
Hi Sir, my question is that I just completed my 12th and I want to learn Korean so that I can be an interpreter or translator, So can you plz tell me what I have to do to become Korean interpreter and please suggest me some good colleges for the same and degrees so that I am eligible to be Korean interpreter. Thank you so much.
To become a successful Korean translator or interpreter, you need near-native level Korean proficiency. This will take approximately 4-5 years. As far as courses are concerned, you can read — Learn Korean in India.
Hey, Guess we’re in the same boat! I’ve passed my 12th too and wanting to be interpreter too!! Which exam are you taking? And where are you from? Army?
If you wanna study the Korean language then JNU is the best option because it’s the only institution that provides bachelors degree in Korean but for this, you’ll have to give JNUEE conducted every year and as for this year, it has been conducted so you can wait for next year.
Yes.
Hello sir i’m Pawan Kumar. I am learning a Korean at home for YouTube support. My question is degree is most compulsory. I have no university degree. so please suggest me what I can do for now.
While a degree is not the criteria for greater success in the job market. However, to enhance your career prospect, at least Bachelor if not Master degree matters! If you want to learn Korean in a proper and systematic way, i would recommend you to join any Korean centre. Self-study that also through Youtube is not very effective due to lack of regular interaction and guidance. In addition, you might lose the interest and your learning progress might become too slow.
Sir! Do I have to give topik for taking admission in Korea for bachelors or I can give topik after I reach in Korea?? Or without topik I won’t get admission in bachelors only?
Every Korean Universities has its own rules and guidelines. Some universities require a certain TOPIK level to get admission in their courses whereas TOPIK is not mandatory in many institutions. You should check and contact the concerned university.
Sir, my question is, if i’ll give the TOPIK exam which will be conducted on 20th Oct. then i’ll be able to get KGSP scholarship? As TOPIK is not necessary for scholarship (it will only inc. my chances for getting it ) so according to you Sir, upto what TOPIK level i should get in order to inc. my chances for getting KGSP scholarship as from March 2019 to Oct 2019 i’ve somewhat 7 months. And if i’ll get one, i’ll be able to attend the classes in 2020 (i mean how much time it takes)? Sir, so sorry for so many questions ??
According to KGSP 2019 for Indians (LINK), the scholarship is offered to 15 candidates only for Master, Doctoral and research programs. The applicants who received outstanding scores in Proficiency in Korean: TOPIK and English will be given preferences. While level is not mentioned, the higher is usually better. In 7 months, you can only complete TOPIK Level I or II. This may not be enough but at least better than nothing and it will also enhance your application. Good luck!
Hey, I am planning for the same. Can you tell me how did it go? this is my email address. Basically from where you able to obtain enough to pass the level and apply for the scholarship. Thanks. My email address is XXXX XXXX. Hope to hear soon from you.
Hi Sir,
Is it possible to get a Language Specialist/ Translator job in India after clearing Topik level 1 or 2? And how is the job market for Korean language in India? I find many job opportunities for other foreign languages like French, Chinese, Spanish, German etc., as compared to Korean in India.
No. If you want to be a Korean specialist or translator, you need TOPIK Level V, which will take roughly 3 to 4 years. While it is true that the number of Korean jobs is less compared to other popular languages, but Korean experts are also fewer. Thus, fewer applicants and less competition. Additionally, Korean job opportunities are also growing in the past few years. Read — Scope of Korean in India, Benefits of Learning Korean.
Can I complete level 3 in 6 months?
No. It usually takes 2 years to pass level 3.
Sir,
I want to apply for phd in Korea. how can I do that. Is TOPIK compulsory?
That will depend upon the research program and educational institutions. Several Universities in South Korea also conduct the classes in English. If your course requires knowledge of Korean you may be asked to take a TOPIK. You can confirm from the University once finalized. In any case, You should learn Korean if you are going there. Your stay will be better.
I wanted to be a doctor in Korea and is it possible for me to become a doctor in India also. Do u know the process sir? For becoming a doctor do i need to give TOPIK test??
Other than few technological aspect, India’s medical industry is as as advanced as South Korea’s. If you want study in the reputed Medical Universities in South Korea. It is definitely possible. There are, however 4 caveats. (i) The Korean degree may not be accepted or recognized in every part of the world including India. Check MCI India for confirmation. (ii) Expensive not just fees but living cost. You may not able to get or do any part-time job to support your education. (iii) You need to be very good in Korean language. Even if TOPIK is not mandatory, you still need to achieve high proficiency. This will easily take 3-5 years. (iv) There is no guarantee of Jobs in Korea after completing the course. This is a big move, so think carefully and take your informed decision.
Sir, is it compulsory to join any institution?, and also do we have to give both level exams and can I give it if i’m in class 12? Sorry for so many questions.
The most important question is why you want to appear for TOPIK Exam? TOPIK results are valid for only 2 years. There is no advantage if you’re not going to use the topik result within 2 years. No, it is not compulsory to join any institute. You can study on own though difficult. You can give exam. What you mean by both level exam? There are total 6 levels.
I want to apply for MFA in Korea. Is it compulsory for me to clear TOPIK level 3? The universities do have their own provision for learning Korean language during their Graduation course. I do have my GRE and TOEFL qualifying results, do I still have to appear for TOPIK?
That will depend on the University and Course. You can check the eligibility and requirement for the same. Even if not compulsory, you should learn Korean if you are planning to study in Korea. The ability to speak at least Intermediate level Korean will make your life a lot easier.
Are there any limited number of attempts for the exam??
No. You can appear for TOPIK Exam as many times as you wish.
Sir,
Do we have to attend some kind of institute or academy to appear this exam?
No. Anyone can appear for TOPIK Exam. Only requirement is Knowledge. To learn Korean, however you have to join any institute or learning centre since Self-study is not very effective.
sir, how much time takes to complete all 6 levels in the course?
My rough estimate is 5 years to complete level 6. There is a big gap between Level 3 and the advanced levels of TOPIK 5 and 6 as per language difficulty is concerned. While it will take a long time but if you are really interested in doing up til TOPIK 6, go for it with full motivation, dedication, and planning. Read — How Long does it take to learn a foreign language?
Sir
What is the total cost to finish level 1 and level 2 include exam fees?
TOPIK Exam fees are quite less. The Fees for learning Korean, however will depend on Institutes and learning centres.
Sir, I am interested in enrolling for a Global MBA at Seoul University. How many marks do I need to score?
Most likely, the courses are taught in English. If that is the case, you don’t need to take the TOPIK exam. You might have to submit a score report of recognized English proficiency tests like TOEFL or IELTS. You can check their website for eligibility criteria.
Is it compulsory to have Topik2 certificate for entry in south Korea by employment visa or training visa?
No, it is not compulsory if any company send you to south Korea for employment or training purpose. TOPIK is required or an added advantage if you want to work with a Korean company or need a proof of Korean proficiency or planning to visit Korea for Job or higher studies.
Sir
Thanks for your reply. its very useful. I understood that there is no any legal requirements to learn Korean language to entry in south Korea for employment or training visa. once again Thank you.
Sir Is it possible to achieve TOPIK level 4 in 4 months from scratch?
Of course not. It will 2-3 years provided that you study roughly 15 hours every week. If want to make career in Korean, aim for TOPIK Level V. This will take at least 3 years.
Where is the test centre in Hyderabad? I want to apply for the next April exam in hyderabad. Any details please?
I saw Hyderabad as test centre but no information regarding the exact location. I will update once i get more information.
How do I apply for the exam? Or where do I register? Is It online or do I have to visit the above mentioned centers to enroll myself?
You have to visit the centre. The next TOPIK exam will be held on 21st April, 2019 and the registration period is 24th to 31st January, 2019. If you have any question regarding the test, you can contact Korean Culture Centre. All contact details are there in this article.
I learnt Korean language and want to learn Korean more.
Great. You should appear for Korean Proficiency Test to check your competence level.
Can I directly approach for level 3 without giving the exam of level 1&2?
Yes, You can definitely skip Level 1 and 2 and give Level 3 directly. Since most people underestimate their language learning time-frame, only try level 3 if your Korean is good enough. The complexity of the Korean language increases after beginners level.
Hello sir, I am planning to pursue MBA in Korea, aiming for sky universities. Whether kgsp or gks scholarships cover such programs? If yes, then to what level giving the TOPIK exam would be beneficial? I know such programs need IELTS or TOEFL scores, but I am not sure about TOPIK. Please guide.
Yes, it covers many universities listed under their offering. But, you have to apply and go through all the procedures. TOPIK is not compulsory but added benefit. Soon by the end of February, I’ll write a comprehensive article covering everything about Korean scholarship.
Sir, I am from Mumbai, but there are no topik exams held here. So can I give the test online, or I have to visit the places were the TOPIK is held?
Since there is no online option, thus, you have to visit one of the 5 test centers to take the TOPIK test.
