What is the Korean Proficiency Test?

Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is designed for non-native Korean speakers to certify their Korean language knowledge.

It is currently being offered SIX times a year to people studying Korean in Korea and twice annually to people in other countries, including India.

The test measures your Korean proficiency through listening comprehension, writing, and reading.

TOPIK Exam in India

Recognition and Acceptance

Founded in 1997 by the Korea Research Foundation, TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) is designed and administered by the National Institute for International Education – NIIED.

It is an entity under the Korean Ministry of Education, the Republic of Korea. (국립국제교육원.)

TOPIK is the most globally recognized Korean language proficiency certification widely accepted by public and private educational institutions, governments, and corporations.

TOPIK Test in India

Difference between TOPIK, EPS-TOPIK & KLPT?

TOPIK is a general Korean test for those who want to study or work or immigrate to Korea.

EPS-TOPIK is Employment Permit System-Test of Proficiency in Korean. EPS TOPIK is needed by those who want to work in Korea as EPS workers (for factory jobs or manufacturing).

As per EPS TOPIK 2021, the exam is conducted only once a year in 16 countries, and the age limit is 18 to 39. There is no EPS TOPIK test center in India.

The exam consists of only the beginners listening and reading tests required for day-to-day activity and perform diverse tasks at work.

KLAT, Korean Language Ability Test, is operated by the Korea Educational Testing Service authorized by the Korean government (Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism).

It adheres to CEFR, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, assessing the authentic proficiency of the Korean language.

Unlike TOPIK, there is only one paper for KLPT.

All applicants take the same set of questions, and the score you get determines your grade/level.

There are FOUR levels, namely KLAT Novice / Beginners KLAT, i.e., B-KLAT (grade 1 to 2), KLAT Intermediate (grade 3 to 4), and KLAT Advanced (grade 5 to 6).

TOPIK seems to be more recognized, accepted, and appropriate for academic goals.

Benefits of the Korean Language Test

The Korean proficiency test is beneficial for obvious reasons. They can be proof of competence for job applications and advanced studies in Korea.

You can demonstrate your Korean proficiency level by giving the language test TOPIK since these certifications provide job seekers and employees a competitive advantage.

Thus, it is an exceptional asset to include on your resume.

Documentary proof of the Korean language test certificate added to other requirements will put you on your way to a smooth interview process.

The test result will somehow restrict the interviewer on the types of questions you are supposed to answer. Instead of asking you about things like “what is an umbrella called in Korean.”

It is most likely that you would instead be asked, “what level did you attain in TOPIK?”

It is as a result of your Korean language test certification included in your qualifications.

Are you planning to study in South Korea?

The Government of South Korea offers KGSP (Korean Government Scholarship Program) to deserving students to promote international exchange in education and mutual friendship amongst participating countries.

TOPIK certification is a prerequisite for such a scholarship.

Besides, these diplomas are recognized and accepted by Korean universities and Educational institutions for undergraduate entry as well as for postgraduate admission.

TOPIK is vital if you plan to apply for permanent residency or look for a working visa in South Korea. It is useful in the ‘Korea Immigration and Integration Program’ (KIIP) operated by the Ministry of Justice.

The KIIP program comprises two halves: Korean language training and Understanding Korean Society.

There are few more advantages like boosting one’s confidence, traveling to Korea, and confirming your Korean proficiency level.

It can translate into developing your personality at a career and social transitioning level.

TOPIK Exam Structure (Pass Mark)

TOPIK Levels

TOPIK has three different categories of testing, namely, beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. There are a total of 6 levels.

TOPIK I is the elementary level test containing two sublevels grades (Level 1 and Level 2).

On the other hand, TOPIK II is the combined intermediate/advanced level with four sublevels (Level 3, Level 4, Level 5, and Level 6).

Validity

TOPIK and EPS-TOPIK results are valid for two (2) years from the time of test result announcements. I’d understand if the validity were longer, like 5-10 years, but two years is relatively less.

I have studied Japanese for more than a year and learned over 500 Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Today, I might not remember even 200.

It is because if one does not practice and read enough, one will forget the most in a couple of years.

I’m sure there must be some genuine reason for 2-year validity!

Hello, I have done BCom then MBA recently. Now I got to know that I am interested in learning East Asian languages, especially in Korean second preference is Japanese, and I wanted to do a BA in any one of these languages.

I know JNU is the best option, and at the same time, it is hard to get admission. I want to know the best university or college options for Korean and Japanese and Chinese. I wanted to do jobs as a translator or teacher else. Can you tell me what the best options are available? Is Jamia Millia Islamia University a good option for BA in Korean, and is it hard to get admission in this? Do I need special classes for the JNU entrance exam or can I do this by self-study and what books I can go through? Please help me out with this.

Since you have already completed UG and PG, you don’t need to do a BA and maybe MA to learn a language. You can do that through any good public or private institutions. If you still wish, you can check the entire list – BA foreign language course. The admission is either based on 12th marks or entrance.

That depends on the course and university you’re seeking. You should first shortlist and check the eligibility criteria and admission timeline. For example, you might need an IELTS score for many such programs. TOPIK can also be beneficial though it might not be obligatory.

If the mode of teaching is English, then you need IELTS or TOEFL score. For example, the SNU requires a minimum level of iBT 80 for TOEFL or IELTS 5.5 for the bachelor’s program. The requirement of TOPIK varies. Some don’t need it, whereas some demand at least a minimum level of 3/4 of the TOPIK. You can check the e-prospectus of various Colleges. However, some knowledge is great to enjoy and live a comfortable life in Korea. Later, when you reach Korea, you can improve it further through real conversational and some add-on elective Korean courses at the target university.

Well, these days, due to time constraints, I’m not tracking GKS 2021. So, difficult to give any meaningful advice. But I guess the procedure would be the same as in 2020. You can check the official document to get some clarification about the entire process. As far as the bachelor program at KNU is concerned, you have to check with the University about the eligibility criteria. In most cases, TOPIK is not compulsory when the medium of teaching is English, but it is an added advantage.

In India, TOPIK won’t play an essential role in your current academic pursuit. Also, TOPIK certification expires in 2 years. So, you might not be able to take advantage of it then. If you like Korean, you can surely learn regardless of the opportunities you get with it.

I didn’t have any Korean classes which give me certification of completion. However, I have access to Coursera’s course organized by Yonsei University. Anyone can give the TOPIK exam. The only thing you need is knowledge of the Korean language as per TOPIK levels. As far as jobs in Korea are concerned, you need to find the positions that fit your profile and apply accordingly. Since the requirement varies, it is difficult to suggest any specific thing.

Sir, if I get into a job in Korea after completing my TOPIK exam within the validity period and then when the validity period expires that is after two years, do I again need to appear for the TOPIK exam in my country? Also, can the companies there really ask the employees to do the exam again even after reaching level 6 just because the period has expired?

That depends on the company. Usually, it is required if you’re applying for a new job where Korean knowledge is necessary. Once you get the job, you don’t need to appear for the test again. However, if you are applying to another organization or want Korean to be officially counted, you have to take it again. You can take TOPIK in Korea or wherever it is feasible for you.

First, choose a language. And to pick the right one, read about various languages, where it is spoken, and how useful they are in different scenarios. Then, start learning that language through a tutor, a learning center, or self-study like books, apps, and online resources. Concentrate on one language at a time, and move to the second one only once you achieve the upper-intermediate level in the 1st one.

TOPIK exam is beneficial, but it has a validity of only two years. You can still take the test to gauge your Korean knowledge.

It depends on the university, type of course, and stream. First, choose the subjects and program, and then make a list of the Universities offering these courses. Then, you can check the eligibility criteria and admission procedure. The websites are in English. So, you won’t face any difficulties. Finally, you can apply as per the details and dates.

Another option is to contact an overseas study consultant that deals with Colleges in South Korea. Good luck Harshini!

After completing the UG degree course, you can pursue a Masters from South Korea. Yes, you can since the Korean universities provide the option for students to work part-time when their course is in session.

First, you have to check the concerned University if they need the TOPIK score and what levels. I’m assuming you are going to pursue the course in English, thus, you may or may not need it. Usually, the test is held in April and October in India, and you can apply in Feb/August. And most importantly, you have to learn Korean to a certain level before applying for TOPIK.

TOPIK-I (Level 1 and 2) has two sections – Reading and Listening whereas, TOPIK II (Level 3 to 6) comprises 3 sections – Reading, Writing, and Listening.

The 1st level consists of elementary activities like day-to-day conversations, greeting, introduction, ordering, buying, and simple sentences from 800 basic words. The word limit and situational topics will increase as per levels. You can also check on the official TOPIK website for all the details.

Unless there is some compulsion that I don’t know, Why do you want to study in Korea after the 10th? Don’t go just for the love of KDrama and KPop. Reality is far different from K-Movies. You should at least complete 12th with good marks. To live a comfortable life, you also need a good command over Korean, and that will easily take a few years. Plus, you also need your parents’ approval and lots of money for your education there.

Long back, I started this blog only to cover in-depth articles related to various languages. Until now, thankfully, I have maintained the same. Scholarship, study or work abroad are altogether different topics and have limited correlation with languages. It requires an enormous time to research, write, update, and reply to thousands of comments, emails, and messages. Also, I prefer writing a detailed article that answers most of the questions. Being a single author and my professional work, it isn’t an easy task. I have a good plan to solve this, and I’ll hopefully, cover this topic in early 2021.

No. It is not mandatory to study at a particular educational institution. You can learn the way you want. Regardless of how you study Korean, you can take the TOPIK exam.

YouTube can be an additional resource, but it cannot replace the proper language learning approach. Perhaps, you can try an affordable institute or online Korean teachers. You can also try some books, podcasts, online study materials, and video lessons. Possibilities are abundant.

As far as KGSP 2021 is concerned, It is quite a vast and different topic. It would be unfair to cover only a few points and missing many vital aspects. But based on demand, I will cover in detail in the future. I’ve planned some exciting things related to the Korean language. Watch this space 🙂

TOPIK is not the only criterion to earn KGSP scholarships, but it definately improves the chances. The higher level of TOPIK is usually better. Aim for at least level 3. Those who have already completed levels 5 or 6 at the time of applying are exempt from the one-year Korean course at the Korean University.

I know and I read the available centers for giving the test in India. I know this isn’t going to do anything, but I am still just writing it here as a suggestion. The will to learn Korean in India has increased over the last 2-3 years immensely. Even the recent article about India choosing to include Korean in its second language program has mentioned it.

The number of people willing to take the test has increased. But there’s a lack of centers. In places like Mumbai, Thane, Kolkata, Bangalore, you’ll find thousands who want to give the exam. I’m writing this on behalf of other people as well. It’s just a suggestion, but there’s really a need for more centers. The demand isn’t meeting the supply.

I really hope it happens in the future. People are waiting for this to happen too and are serious about it because it’s related to their career path.

I appreciate your thought. But organizing an international exam takes lots of effort, collaboration, manpower, and need to follow plenty of strict guidelines. This is not just with Korean, but nearly with all the foreign languages. The only exceptions are French and German because of their massive organizational presence in India for the past 5-7 decades. For example, Spanish and Japanese are quite popular, but there are only 6 and 8 test centers in India. Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian have merely 1-3.

Most likely, they will add Bangalore as the 6th TOPIK center. I believe Mumbai should also be on the list. Also, unlike other exams that are valid for life, TOPIK has validity for only 2 years.

    Hello sir,
I’m currently learning Spanish and Korean. I have already completed my Certificate course in Spanish and would apply for the Diploma course this year, but because of COVID, it’s on a break right now. Though, I regularly study it myself.

I never learned Korean from any institute, as convincing my parents for letting me learn just one language was tough. So, I’ve been studying Korean by myself for a few months. I’m dedicated to both languages, just a bit more inclined towards Korean. I have B.com (hons) degree, so I’m not aiming for doing another bachelor’s degree. I want to become a translator/interpreter. What are the qualifications required to be done, especially in the embassy of the Republic of Korea? Or in the embassy of India, situated in Korea? Will TOPIK be enough? How much experience do I need to have before applying? And thank you for saying that it takes years to attain a 4-5th level of proficiency, because I thought, maybe I’m slow.

I’m studying Korean through the “Korean From Zero” book, I have already completed the First 2 books, along with multiple revisions. What more do I need to do? Computer courses? Learn typing? If I want to become a translator/interpreter in an MNC, what are the qualifications there? Would an MBA from IGNOU be enough? Or do I need to do something else?

Currently, I’m just focusing on improving my language skills, but I want to prepare beforehand, and I can’t find suitable answers on Google or through anyone else. Please reply, I’m waiting for it eagerly.
    Thank You

If you wish to be Korean translator or interpreter, aim for TOPIK level 6. Since job opportunities are limited in the embassies, you can try in various MNCs. MBA is a splendid choice, but only if you enroll for a full-time regular course, and not like IGNOU.

And one more thing, sir, please tell me what is the scope of this language because many people tell me that Korean has very little scope in India. That’s why I am getting confused. I want to learn Korean, but I don’t have much information.

Korean is a low-demand and low-supply language. It means opportunities are limited, but the number of Korean professional are also fewer in India.

Many people like Korean culture and wish to learn, but very few actually take regular courses. Most of them quit or lose interest after learning some basic things through self-study. If you are serious enough regarding career, enroll somewhere.

DU offers two types of Korea courses: A 3-year part-time advanced Diploma (Daulat Ram) or a 2-year full-time PG Advanced Diploma (Arts Faculty). Both are good choices. You can also consider KCC at Lajpat Nagar. I have written quite a few articles about Korean, and you can type Korean in the search bar at the top-right corner.

The TOPIK exam occurs twice in India, April, and October, but for example, if I need the score in September, to apply for colleges (as the deadline is in September). I can’t apply the April month TOPIK exam, as I have other exams in April, then is there any alternative I can do, is there anyway, the Korean embassy of India can help?

No. The exam dates are fixed for everyone. Also, TOPIK is not required for a vast majority of courses in Korea. So, you can check with the concerned College if you really need TOPIK certification.

Both English and Korean proficiency are accepted. There is no specific exam for the KGSP scholarship, but they take a few rounds of competitive interview. The eligibility criteria, available courses, and colleges vary every year, and all these conditions are set out by the Korean government.

I’m going to do apparel (fashion) designing in college and I want to go to Korea for this major. Is it compulsory for me to do the TOPIK exam? I know basic Korean (only to speak). If I have to do the TOPIK exam, where & from which book should I learn for the exam. As per the university application, I have to do it till TOPIK level 3. What type of question will be asked? is it basic sentences or all hard?

It depends on the University. If they are asking for TOPIK certification, then you have to take it. Remember, TOPIK has only 2-year validity. TOPIK level 3 is intermediate and covers reading, listening, and writing. You need a proper study plan to achieve it. Books alone won’t be enough. I’d suggest finding a Korean teacher or institute. They will provide you everything to help you achieve level III more efficiently.

It isn’t easy to get a job in South Korea entirely based on academic qualifications. It would help if you had in-demand professions, fluency in Korean, experience, and available opportunity. If there is an absolute scarcity of homegrown talent, then it is possible. Otherwise, most companies will try to avoid foreign employees because of too many hassles such as compliance, Visa restrictions, lack of human interaction during the recruitment process and employment verification, and time-consuming for employes to get used to the Korean work environment. TOPIK can only add more value to your profile, but not enough to get a job there. Level 3 is lower intermediate, at least target for Level 4 or 5. You can achieve a beginner’s competency on your own, but beyond that, consider finding a teacher or join any Korean language institution.

There is nothing to be demotivated about anything. If your dream is to visit Korea, you can go anytime, even if you don’t speak a Korean word. But knowing the language makes the journey more fruitful. There are plenty of Indians living in South Korea, and not all of them Speak Korean.

If you have the interest, you can continue learning and also take TOPIK to gauge your level. If your purpose is to get a job in South Korea solely based on the Korean language, then, that would not be easy because everybody speaks Korean there. There are various other requirements, and only an overseas consultant can help you. This is not only for Korean but for every language. And, you can also get a Korean specialist job in India. Good luck!

As a Korean language expert, you can work in Korean companies or Indian businesses that deal with Korea. Besides, you can also work as a teacher, translator, interpreter, tour guide, or any jobs in MNC, export-houses, leisure industries that involve Korean. There are many possibilities. But for a vast majority of such employments, you need a higher level in Korean like TOPIK Level V or a long term course from any University or educational institution, and that will take a considerable amount of time, say a few years. Without possessing advanced proficiency, it is difficult to get any decent Korean job. You can consider all the factors before deciding to move your career towards Korean.

    Hello Sir,
I also have a great interest in learning a foreign language and Korean is the first. What would be the best thing for me to begin with? At present, I’m preparing for the entrance exams because I am studying in 12th grade. I can read Korean fluently but can’t really understand what I read. I want to keep in touch with the language for the next 6 months, after which I can give my time to it. Please help me, sir.

Everything depends on your goal, and why you wish to learn Korean. The answer will vary depending on the reason, like a hobby, or full-fledged career, or just an additional skill. One can learn how to read Korean in just 4 days. It is too easy! However, to become a Korean interpreter, even 4 years are not enough. Take your time, read more, and think over it.

You need to appear for TOPIK Exam, and not EPS-TOPIK. The EPS-T is useful to work in Korea as EPS workers (like factory jobs). One can acquire the Hangul alphabet, and read & write some Korean in a few weeks. If, however, you aim to work in Korea or work as a Korean specialist, then target TOPIK Level 5, a prerequisite for most of the jobs where Korean language skill is needed. To pass level V and able to speak with natives, it will take 3-5 years. Learning Korean is a vital decision since it takes a considerable amount of time. Good Luck!

The results are almost always declared on time. I don’t think TOPIK is compulsory if the course is taught in English. He can give the exam in India and can contact the Korean Cultural centre for the same. Also, The TOPIK exam is held 6 times in South Korea and only twice in India. So, even if he misses or not declared in Korea, he can give the next one in 2-3 months.

The career possibilities can open up depending on your level of engagement with the language. The ability to speak one language fluently is better than acquiring elementary knowledge in 4 languages. In short, language skill is helpful only if you achieve Intermediate or higher level proficiency. I’d suggest picking one language between German, Japanese, and Korean, and stick to that one for the next few years. Whatever you decide, join any learning centre to achieve B2 (German) or N2 (Japanese) or Level 5 (Korean)! Self-study is not very effective beyond the beginner’s level. While a degree is not the criteria for greater success in the job market. However, to enhance your career prospect, at least Bachelor if not Master degree matters! If you want to learn Korean in a proper and systematic way, i would recommend you to join any Korean centre. Self-study that also through Youtube is not very effective due to lack of regular interaction and guidance. In addition, you might lose the interest and your learning progress might become too slow.

According to KGSP 2019 for Indians (LINK), the scholarship is offered to 15 candidates only for Master, Doctoral and research programs. The applicants who received outstanding scores in Proficiency in Korean: TOPIK and English will be given preferences. While level is not mentioned, the higher is usually better. In 7 months, you can only complete TOPIK Level I or II. This may not be enough but at least better than nothing and it will also enhance your application. Good luck!

No. If you want to be a Korean specialist or translator, you need TOPIK Level V, which will take roughly 3 to 4 years. While it is true that the number of Korean jobs is less compared to other popular languages, but Korean experts are also fewer. Thus, fewer applicants and less competition. Additionally, Korean job opportunities are also growing in the past few years. Read — Scope of Korean in India, Benefits of Learning Korean.

If your course requires knowledge of Korean you may be asked to take a TOPIK. You can confirm from the University once finalized. In any case, You should learn Korean if you are going there. Other than few technological aspect, India’s medical industry is as as advanced as South Korea’s. If you want study in the reputed Medical Universities in South Korea. It is definitely possible. There are, however 4 caveats. (i) The Korean degree may not be accepted or recognized in every part of the world including India. Check MCI India for confirmation. (ii) Expensive not just fees but living cost. You may not able to get or do any part-time job to support your education. (iii) You need to be very good in Korean language. Even if TOPIK is not mandatory, you still need to achieve high proficiency. This will easily take 3-5 years. (iv) There is no guarantee of Jobs in Korea after completing the course. This is a big move, so think carefully and take your informed decision.

The most important question is why you want to appear for TOPIK Exam? TOPIK results are valid for only 2 years. There is no advantage if you’re not going to use the topik result within 2 years. No, it is not compulsory to join any institute. You can study on own though difficult. You can give exam. What you mean by both level exam? There are total 6 levels.

While it will take a long time but if you are really interested in doing up til TOPIK 6, go for it with full motivation, dedication, and planning.
