Why choose a Bachelor’s in Foreign Languages?

Of all the options, why choose a major, i.e., BA in foreign languages after 12th?

There are many reasons to attend colleges and universities in India, from improved career prospects to affordability.

Let’s browse some crucial incentives.

1. Only a University can offer Degree Programs

You can learn a new language by enrolling in different educational institutes in India.

You will receive a certificate or diploma upon completion of the program.

However, only a university can award a BA or MA degree in foreign languageObtaining

Obtaining a UGC- or AICTE-approved university degree is essential for pursuing higher education and for eligibility for most jobs.

If you wish to learn a new language after 12th grade, you must simultaneously pursue a part-time language program and a full-time degree course.

Why study two courses when one is enough to kick-start a career in languages?

Additionally, the degree programs offer a foreign language in a multidisciplinary context.

2. Affordable Fee Structure

In contrast to private institutes and embassy-affiliated cultural centers, government universities offer quality education with low, student-friendly, affordable tuition fees.

This is because it is partly or fully funded by the State or central government through the University Grants Commission.

There is rarely any other cost that would bother students.

While the charges for private universities and colleges are comparatively high, you will never have to worry about costs once admitted to a public university.

3. Regular events, Exchange programs, and Scholarships

Beyond classroom-based foreign language courses, students can practice the new language and participate in a range of activities. It includes conferences, cultural programs, film screenings, music concerts, seminars, workshops, and discussions, to name a few.

Additionally, renowned scholars, distinguished researchers, visiting and guest faculty, foreign delegates, and intellectuals enrich students’ on-campus learning experience.

Recognizing the value of international experience, several Indian Universities collaborate with or maintain Memoranda of Understanding with prominent foreign universities worldwide to facilitate cultural exchange programs.

Many Universities also offer study abroad programs and scholarships to deserving students.

That will depend on the university. The age limit varies from one university to another. So you have to check with your target university. If your goal is to learn a language to enhance career prospects, you can also study at any private institute.

And that entrance test tests what? How good and serious you’re at this language? No.
It tests the general knowledge about the whole world which is what a UPSC aspirant studies! And that’s how they become capable of clearing it.
Do you perhaps know if there’s any university in India that tests the language skills of a student in their BA entrance exam?

Nearly all such entrances check General English. Universities don’t test the foreign language skills of the target BA program because BA starts from zero and no prior knowledge of that language is required. And this is true for all universities to my knowledge. If one takes entrance for MA in a particular language, the test is totally based on that language.

Since you already have done B2, you don’t need BA in Spanish. Maybe you can consider C1 or MA in Spanish if you’re already a graduate. You can try various teaching avenues like schools, institutes, online and offline tutoring.

Only Japanese — DU, EFLU, TMV.
Both Chinese and Japanese — JNU, BHU, VBU, Doon.

Apply to 3-5 different universities, depending on your location and viability.

Language specialist jobs are meant for those who have a higher command over a particular language. One needs not to be a graduate in that language. So, if you wish to work as a language expert, you should pick a language and achieve an advanced level in the same.

That depends on your goal. If you wish to make a full-fledged career in a foreign language, BA and MA in a particular language is a fabulous choice. And if you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket and uncertain about what you want, go with BBA along with a language course from a private institute. While CUJ seems a better choice, but you can go with either one as per feasibility.

As far as job placement, you can check the track record with existing students. Regardless of that, you can still find jobs if you learn German quite well.
