Founded in 1916 by Madan Mohan Malaviya, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh is one of the oldest and most prestigious Central Universities in India. It is the largest residential university in Asia with over 12,000 students living on campus.

Foreign Language courses in BHU – Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Arts is the oldest and largest faculty and occupies a unique position in the history of BHU. Realizing the great importance of foreign languages in India, several foreign languages were established long back. The university imparts teaching in many foreign language courses in BHU at various levels under the departments of Foreign Languages, French Studies, German Studies, Arabic Studies, and Persian Studies.
The center produces some of the most exceptional foreign language teacher, interpreters and translators, and numerous foreign language experts. Due to the overwhelming popularity and a massive demand for Foreign language courses in the market, BHU caters to the needs of a vast number of students who want to make a career in foreign languages. BHU will be ranked among the top 10 Universities in India in the field of language learning.
1. Department of Foreign Languages – Russian and Chinese
The Department of Foreign Languages offers various part-time Diploma and full-time degree courses. At BHU, Department of Foreign Languages has the distinction of conducting teaching programs in seven major Asian languages and European languages; namely, Chinese, Japanese, Sinhalese, Russian, Italian, Spanish and Polish.
The Department of Foreign Languages also planning to introduce degree courses in Japanese and several languages of the Southeast Asian countries following the recent thrust of our government towards Look East policy. These programs range from Certificate/Diploma courses in various tongues to BA (Hons.), MA and Ph.D. Currently, the courses offered are:-
- BA (Hons.), MA and Ph.D. in Chinese and Russian.
- 2-year part-time Diploma in Chinese, Korean, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Sinhalese, and Polish.
2. Department of German Studies
The Department of German Studies of Faculty of Arts teaches German both as full-time and part-time courses covering language, literature & linguistics. It is today one of such department in the entire region of UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Eastern and North-Eastern India, where one can study German from Beginners’ Level through BA, MA and to Ph.D. in German Studies.
Department of German Studies maintains an excellent level of co-operation with institutions from German-Speaking countries, and regular visits of many distinguished scholars from Germany, Austria & Switzerland are arranged. The department runs 2-year part-time Diploma and full-time BA (Hons), MA and Ph.D. Program in German.
3. Department of French Studies
The Department of French Studies courses are designed to acquire not only the French language skills & efficiency but also actively involved in research in Comparative Literature and Translation Studies. The Department of French Studies offers 2-year part-time Diploma and full-time BA (Hons), MA and Ph.D. Program in French.
4. Department of Arabic Studies
Started in 1917, the Department of Arabic studies has been researching in the area of Arabic literature (modern and classical) and Arab History and Culture and other allied subjects. The center offers full-time BA (Hons), MA and Ph.D. Program in Arabic. It also conducts a 1-year Part-Time Certificate, 2-year Diploma, and two year PG Diploma course in Arabic.
5. Department of Persian Studies
The Department of Persian studies was established in 1922. If you’re interested in learning the Persian Language in India, then the Department of Persian Studies offers full-time BA (Hons), MA and Ph.D. Program in Persian. It also offers 1-year Part-Time Certificate, 2-year Diploma and two year PG Diploma Course in Persian.
Admission procedures – Eligibility, Date and Entrance Exam
UG, PG, and Ph.D. ENTRANCE TEST (UET/PET/RET) 2019-2020
For admission in BA (Hons.) in Arabic, Persian, Chinese, German, French, and Russian, The minimum eligibility is passed or appeared 10+2 or equivalent examination securing a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate.
For admission in MA in Arabic, French, German, Persian, Russian and Chinese, The minimum eligibility requirement is BA with PG Diploma/Advanced Diploma in the concerned language (Arabic / French / German / Persian / Russian / Chinese). You need to secure a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate both at BA and Diploma levels.
For admission in Ph.D. (Doctoral) program in Arabic, French, German, Persian, Russian and Chinese, The minimum eligibility requirement is Masters degree in the concerned or any one of the allied subjects (Arabic / French / German / Persian / Russian / Chinese). At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.
BHU Research Entrance Test (RET) is a paper-pen based research entrance test directed for Ph.D. Admission in BHU. RET consists of 3 stages, and Ph.D. aspirants need to clear each step of this exam to be considered for Ph.D. Admission.
For Admission in Part-time Certificate and Diploma Language Courses, ONLY Regular students of the BHU currently enrolled in any on-going full-time course within the Main Campus of BHU can apply. The Affiliated Colleges and Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, Barkachha, Mirzapur are not eligible for these short-term courses.
BHU conducts Undergraduate and Postgraduate All India Entrance Tests, also called “UET” and “PET” respectively. The entrance exam for 2019 UET/PET will be conducted in April-May, 2019. Admissions will be made according to merit in the UET / PET, subject to fulfillment of eligibility requirements and availability of seats in the particular course.
Every year in February, one can apply online by completing the online application form. Admit card is issued one week before the exam. All India entrance examination is conducted in April-May. The result is announced mostly in the 1st-2nd week of June. BHU Full-Time Language Courses 2019 (UET / PET)
- Start of Online Application Process – 10th February 2019.
- Closing of Online Application Process – 09th March 2019.
- Date of BHU Entrance Exam (UET/PET) – 12th May 2019 (UG) and 18th May 2019 for (PG).
- Admission and Registration for selected candidates – June-July 2019.
- Courses offered (UG)— BA in Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, German, Persian and Russian.
- Courses offered (PG) — MA in Arabic, Persian, French, Chinese, Russian and German.
PET-2019 will be held in the Computer Based Test (CBT) modes, whereas UET-2019 will be conducted both in the pen-paper (OMR based) and Computer Based Test (CBT) modes. Test in both the forms would be carried on the same date and at the same time with the same question paper.

- (A) 1-year part-time Certificate courses in Arabic and Persian.

- (C) One year Bridge Course in French — Eligibility is Graduation in any discipline + 2 years Diploma in French.
- Full-time PG Diploma in Arabic and Persian — Basic Knowledge of Arabic. Applicant should NOT be enrolled in any full-time course of the University/elsewhere.
Only Regular students of the BHU currently enrolled in any on-going full-time course within the Main Campus of BHU can apply. Final year student cannot apply for Diploma Course, and PG DIPLOMA Courses are open to all. A student can apply for ONLY ONE course, i.e., Certificate or Diploma in any language.
