In the past decade, several Indian universities have launched Korean programs to equip students with fluency in Korean.
There are three main reasons for the rapidly deepening ties between India and South Korea: job opportunities in Korean and MNC companies, and a surge in the popularity of Korean culture.
1. JNU – Centre for Korean Studies (CKS)
The language courses at JNU need no introduction.
The Centre for Korean Studies (CKS) is a JNU School of Language, Literature, and Culture Studies (SLL&CS) unit.
It is the most active academic center for promoting understanding and research in Korean.
The center offers full-time B.A., M.A., M.Phil, and Ph.D. programs in Korean language, literature, and culture studies.

2. Korean Courses at Delhi University
There are two types of Korean language courses at Delhi University.
One is at the university level, and the other is a few Colleges affiliated with DU that offer part-time Korean language classes in Delhi.
(i) DU Colleges with Korean courses
- SGTB Khalsa → One-year Certificate.
- St. Stephen’s College → One-year certificate.
- Daulat Ram College → 3-year Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma.
- Shyam Lal College, Shahdara → 2-year Certificate and Diploma.
- Ramjas College, University Enclave, New Delhi → 2-year Certificate and Diploma.
(ii) Department of East Asian Studies
The Department of East Asian Studies at the Arts faculty runs a one-year full-time pg intensive diploma (KF-1) and a full-time pg intensive advanced Diploma (KF-2).
No prior knowledge of Korean is required for KF-1.
Students pursuing an MA, M.Phil., or Ph.D. in East Asian studies must choose one of the following languages: Mandarin, Japanese, or Korean.

3. JMI (Faculty of Humanities and Languages)
From 2017-2018, the Faculty of Humanities offers a One-year Certificate and a One-year Diploma course in the Korean Language.
Jamia Millia Islamia has signed an MoU with the Korea Foundation, supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, to teach certificate and elective Korean Language courses in JMI.
There are 40 total seats for a year-long certificate course and 30 for the diploma. The fee for each program is Rs 7,200.
In the 2019-20 academic session, the department began offering a BA in Korean. It has also started conducting an MA in Korean.
Admission to all Korean programs is based on merit determined by an entrance test conducted by JMI, followed by an interview if required.

4. Korean Education at Manipur University
The much-awaited Korean training began in September 2012 at Manipur University.
The Korean language is quite popular in Manipur. Since the Hallyu wave began, many young people in Manipur and seven other states have closely followed Korean movies and pop-to-fashion trends.
Following this emulation of Korean culture, Manipur University has launched a 3-year full-time BA in Korean and a PG Advanced Diploma in Korean (KF-1 & KF-2).

The newly launched Centre for Global Languages (CGL), run by the newly formed Bengaluru Central University (BCU), is home to 11 foreign languages.
The CGL offers a wide range of Korean programs in Bangalore, from beginner to advanced.

Students can focus on Korean courses at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) through the Department of Foreign Languages.
The faculty of Arts at BHU offers a two-year part-time Diploma in Korean.
Diploma courses are open only to Regular BHU students currently enrolled in an ongoing full-time course at the main campus in Varanasi.

For most jobs, companies ask for at least a bachelor’s degree and French certifications. You can learn any language of your choice as there isn’t any particular that matches best with French.

It is not possible to go directly into an MA in Korean without completing a BA program in Korean or gaining similar knowledge. Even then, you must pass an entrance exam. So given your situation, you can take part-time courses at any college or private institute.

EFLU and Hyderabad University offer Korean courses, but they may not suit you. So, you can try some private institutes, though not aware of any well-known name in Hyderabad.

1) That depends on the course you’re seeking. It will be hard to get admission to degree programs like MA in Korean. Not because of age, but not having prior knowledge of Korean like a Bachelor in Korean.
2) Recommendation for what? You don’t need that if you want to study Korean in a short-term program in any private setup.
3) I’m unsure if any Korean university offers TOPIK level 4 courses. This is done by private institutes, whether in India or Korea. If you can afford it, you can easily study in Korea. But if it’s really worth it or not, that is up to you to decide.

You can study at any private institute or university in Korea. I doubt if there are any eligibility criteria for short-term courses. It just costs a decent amount of money if we consider airfare, tuition fees and accommodation, and other expenses. It is still beneficial, but not as much compared to full-time programs.

I am going to do a professional course after my undergraduate, so sir can I pursue Korean at that time from JNU? If I join JNU for a Master in Korean, what is the eligibility for that sir, and also is there any entrance test for it?
It would be difficult to get admission to JNU for MA in Korean because seats are fewer, and you need good knowledge like BA in Korean to crack the entrance. However, you can study at any private institute and take the TOPIK test to get certifications.

You cannot do KF-1 without completing graduation as it is a postgraduate course. So, first, do graduation, then KF-1 and KF-2.

Nd can you tell from when the semester is going to start for beginners in 2021? So please respond, sir, as I m very interested in this.
The next semester will start in early 2022, and the admission process will begin in December. And don’t worry about the interview questions. It is relatively easy, covering your introduction, academic pursuit, about Korean culture and South Korea, Korean language, why only Korean, and reasons to learn Korean, goals, etc. KCC is a nice place to learn Korean, but that is not the only option. So don’t worry.

1) Usually, most diploma courses cover similar topics, including grammar, writing, reading, etc. You can check their syllabus to get an overall idea.
2) Yes, you can do a master’s in whatever subject you want. And there won’t be any problem.

4) Opportunities exist everywhere, including India, but pretty limited. I’d suggest going for a job-oriented combination.

Sir, i have a doubt, is KCC better than du for learning the Korean language? Also, sir do the universities providing diplomas in Korean also include translation and interpretation classes, as are provided in a degree course?
There isn’t much difference as both offer similar type of part-time course. However, the quality and cultural exposure is better at KCC. So, go with that if you can. Translation and interpretation classes are not part of the diploma, but they are vital for degree courses, especially MA in Korean.
Sir, the duration of the course In KCC is 2 years and in Daulat Ram college is 3 years, for part-time courses in Korean at beginner intermediate and advanced level. Sir do you know that does KCC covers any less of the syllabus since the duration is comparatively short.
The total duration at KCC isn’t 2 years, but 3 years. This is because they have 8 levels, and they usually cover 3 levels in a year. Also, the Advanced diploma and KCC courses aren’t the same. The latter is more geared towards TOPIK and a practical approach. However, both are good, and you can pick either one. Whatever you choose, do take TOPIK to evaluate your Korean ability.

I’m not a fan of the DU certificate course, but you can still do a certificate this year. Once you get admission to KCC, join there. If, for some reason, you won’t be able to study at KCC, you can still learn at DU and take the TOPIK test.
When will the application process start for pg intensive diploma in the Korean language offered by the Department of East Asian Studies, DU? I have checked various websites but I can’t find it anywhere.
You have to check with the department of EAS. You can either call on the given number or visit the campus. They are a bit late to update the website, and the information is a bit cluttered.

Hello sir, I wanted to ask, in order to get admission in private institutions like Korean culture centre, Arirang Korean academy, iickl – do we need to give entrance tests or we can just contact them through mail or via call and just get the admission directly. Also, sir do you know from which month new session in Arirang Korean academy starts.
At Arirang and IICKL, admission is based on first-come and first-served. On the other hand, you have to give the interview at KCC for admission, though this isn’t that difficult. Contact Arirang for the latest enrollment dates.

KCC doesn’t provide a Diploma like a college, but their own courses and certification. If you want to learn Korean, KCC is a good choice.

I want to study in South Korea as I’m from a middle-class family so my family can’t afford foreign study. So, I’m a little bit confused about my first step. Should I take admission in JNU/KCC or wait for KGSP.
The KGSP scholarship is always hard to get since there are very few seats available. So I’d suggest doing a BA + MA in Korean from JNU. You can also do a bachelor’s in Korean from Jamia, CUJ, or Manipur University. Alternatively, you can do UG + PG in the stream of your choice along with part-time Korean courses at KCC like institutes.

Yes, you can join KCC directly after the 12th. Alternatively, you can also study at KCLC in Kolkatta. For GKS, you can read their documentation published on their site.

And I hope your reasons are much more than Kpop and drama. Bachelor’s degree is not compulsory, and you can make a career in Korean, regardless of the Korean course you take. As far as career choice and subjects are concerned, that is difficult to answer and pretty subjective. JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia are the only two Indian universities with BA in the Korean program. If you are not able to crack their entrance test, you can try any private institutes, college, or Korean culture center for part-time Korean courses.

I don’t think any College or Institute can help you secure the KGSP scholarship since it is merit-based. You have to check the eligibility criteria and apply them accordingly. You can learn Korean by joining the Korean cultural center (KCC) in Delhi or the Korean culture and language centre (KCLC) in Kolkata.

Unfortunately, I’m not aware of any option in Indore. Maybe you can try to learn some beginner’s level with the help of an online Korean tutor, books, and resources available on the internet. The combination mentioned above offers a limited scope in India. But, you can always learn a language as a hobby.

You can do any 2-3 years course that covers the TOPIK curriculum. But do remember that TOPIK has validity for only 2 years.

JNU and Central University of Jharkhand are the only two universities in India offering Masters in Korean. The JNU entrance syllabus is mentioned in prospectus form, and you can check the previous year’s paper questions on the website. Since the number of seats are few (5-10), you really have to work hard to crack the entrance.
What about the admission procedure of the Central University of Jharkhand? Is there any entrance test? And the link you gave for previous year’s questions of JNU is broken perhaps, and it’s not opening. Is there any preparatory book for it?
I think there is some technical issue on the JNU site. You can try later. Yes, CUJ takes admission based on a common entrance test. The entrance requires candidates to have completed or knowledge similar to BA in Korean. I doubt a book can cover all. You need to have excellent command over the Korean language and culture.

You don’t need BA in Korean to apply for a scholarship. However, if you pass TOPIK level 3 or above, it can boost your chance. You have to appear for an interview to get admission at KCC. The future is bright if you focus on the right combination.
Is JNU good for BA hons in the Korean language? The protest is going in JNU.
JNU is an excellent choice for Bachelor in Korean. The occasional protest doesn’t deteriorate the quality of teaching or delay the academic term. If you wish to crack the JNUEE, you have to prepare really well.

There are several excellent options. You can try the Korean Cultural Center in Delhi or Chennai. In fact, it has a branch in Patna also though they cover only elementary level there. Besides, you can choose one of the reputed private institutes in Delhi, Kolkata, etc.

Sadly, there is no option to learn Korean in Mumbai, at least not in my knowledge. Maybe you can try to find a teacher through local classified sites. Besides, you can learn the elementary level through self-study, books, and audio/video lessons. While the beginners level Korean is straightforward, however, beyond that, it is complicated, tricky, and lengthy. And you definitely need a teacher or Institute. Start on own, and who knows, you might get some options down the line. I’ll update it.

You can learn the alphabet Hangul and beginners level conversation in a few days. However, To speak like a native Korean, it will take 6-7 years of regular study. I don’t think it is realistic to achieve such proficiency in India. You can complete the upper Intermediate level in 3 years, and for that, you can join KCC in Delhi or Chennai. There are a few more options, but most of them don’t teach beyond the lower intermediate level due to low demand.

You ‘ve been doing such a great job and this is highly appreciable… :) Sir, I want to pursue the Korean language as a career but it’s getting tough to find a B.A. program in Korean in Delhi (because JNU admissions are over). I wanted to ask that is it important to have a BA course to become a translator or an interpreter? (and I have just passed my 12th class). I hope you could answer it in the best way possible.

No, BA in Korean is not the only option. You can pursue graduation in any subject of your choice and simultaneously learn Korean at any reputed centre. You can aim to clear TOPIK Level V/VI in 3-5 years. Check — Proficiency in Korean.

Yes, you can. You can also appear for the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK). It is a prerequisite for several master programs in South Korea.

Once you achieve an advanced level like TOPIK V or similar, you can apply to any educational institution that offers Korean language courses and, in the meantime, improve your contacts and references. Schools, institutes, and online classes are some examples. Since TOPIK has a validity of only 2 years, thus, you can also consider programs from any reputed Korean learning centers. This, of course, is optional.
