Unluckily for me, I had no one to answer these questions and had to find out the answers myself.
There isn’t enough information out there on Korean language programs in India.
But perhaps it should be since the benefits of Learning Korean are higher today than ever before.
The number of people learning Korean in India is far fewer than in other Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, China, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
However, in recent times, a notable increase in demand has been seen in Korean courses across the country.
The big spike in enrolment in Korean language studies is primarily due to the rising popularity of K-Pop, K-Drama, K-Movies, Kimchi, K-Beauty leading to what has been termed the “Korean Wave” or “Hallyu.”
There are innumerable benefits of learning a new tongue.
It ranges from job employment or higher studies in South Korea, immigration, business, traveling, cultural aspect, or want to rediscover a long-forgotten hobby.

A) Korean Language Course at Indian University
In the past decade, several Indian universities have started various Korean programs to equip students with fluency in the Korean language.
Rapidly deepening ties between India and South Korea, job opportunities in Korean and MNC companies, and a surge in the popularity of Korean culture are three main reasons.
1. JNU – Centre for Korean Studies (CKS)
The language courses at JNU needs no introduction.
The Centre for Korean Studies (CKS) is a unit of the School of language, literature, and culture studies (SLL&CS) at JNU.
It is the most active academic center for promoting the understanding and research of Korean.
The center offers full-time B.A., M.A., M.Phil, and Ph.D. programs in Korean language, literature, and culture studies.
The admission is granted based on an entrance examination.
If you are interested in pursuing a degree and master level Korean courses in India, then JNU is the best choice in the country.
2. Korean Courses at Delhi University
There are two types of Korean language courses at Delhi University.
One is at the university level, and the other is few Colleges affiliated to DU offering the part-time Korean language classes in Delhi.
(i) DU Colleges with Korean courses
- SGTB Khalsa — One year Certificate.
- St. Stephen’s College — One year certificate.
- Daulat Ram College — certificate, diploma, and Advanced Diploma.
(ii) Department of East Asian Studies
The Department of East Asian Studies at Arts faculty runs a one-year full-time pg intensive diploma (KF-1) and a one-year full-time pg intensive advanced Diploma (KF-2).
No prior Korean knowledge is a prerequisite for KF-1.
The students pursuing MA, M.Phil., or Ph.D. in East Asian studies have to choose one language between Mandarin, Japanese, or Korean.
The admission is through SLAT entrance Test.
3. JMI (Faculty of Humanities and Languages)
From the academic year 2017-2018, the faculty of humanity offers a One-year Certificate and a One-year Diploma course in the Korean Language.
Jamia Millia Islamia has signed MoU with the Korea foundation supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to teach certificate and elective Korean Language courses in JMI.
The total number of seats is 40 for a year-long certificate course and 30 for the Diploma. The fee for each program is Rs 7,200.
From the academic session 2019-20, the department began offering a BA in Korean.
The admission to all Korean programs based on merit determined by an entrance test conducted by JMI, followed by an interview if required.
4. Korean Education in Manipur University
The much-awaited Korean training began in September 2012 at Manipur University.
The Korean language is quite popular in Manipur. Since the Hallyu wave struck, from Korean movies and pop to fashion styles are followed closely by a large number of people in the Manipur and seven states of the region.
Due to this emulation towards Korean culture, Manipur University has finally started a one-year certificate and a diploma course in Korean.
It is also one of the TOPIK test centers in India.
5. Bengaluru Central University (Centre for Global Studies)
The newly launched Centre for Global Languages (CGL) run by the newly formed Bengaluru Central University (BCU) is home to 11 different foreign languages.
The CGL offers a wide range of Korean programs, starting from beginner levels to advanced ones in Bangalore.
The admission in short-term Korean courses is based on the merit list/cut-off. The CGL offers the following classes for session 2019-2020:-
- Certificate – I | Duration = 4 Months, Fees = ₹ 7,000 for Regular & ₹ 8,000 for Weekend.
- Certificate – II | Duration = 4 Months, Fees = ₹ 7,000 for Regular & ₹ 8,000 for Weekend.
- Diploma | Duration = 8 Months, Fees = ₹ 8,000 for Both Regular & Weekend.
- Higher Diploma | Duration = 8 Months, Fees = ₹ 10,000 for Both Regular & Weekend.
- Advanced Diploma | Duration = 8 Months, Fees = ₹ 11,000 for Both Regular & Weekend.
6. BHU (Arts Faculty)
Students can focus on Korean course at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) through the Department of Foreign Languages.
The faculty of Arts at BHU offers a two-year part-time Diploma in Korean.
Diploma courses are open only for Regular students of the BHU currently enrolled in any on-going full-time course of BHU within the main campus in Varanasi.
The qualifying examination for the Diploma program is 10+2 or (equivalent) or higher as the case may be.
7. English and Foreign Language University (EFLU), Hyderabad
Interdisciplinary study in a variety of languages allows students to integrate the study of history, literature, culture, and Foreign Languages at EFLU (English and Foreign Language University.
It is only one of its kind in India dedicated to teaching foreign languages.
The department of Asian languages through the School of Arab and Asian studies at EFL offers a variety of East Asian language courses at Hyderabad.
The Department of Asian languages offers a 1-year part-time certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma of proficiency in Korean through entrance test.
8. Nalanda University (School of Languages and Literature)
Nalanda University was one of the oldest Universities in the world founded in the fifth century.
The new Nalanda University is envisaged as a center of the inter-civilizational dialogue.
Students can focus on Korean language and literature at Nalanda University through the School of Languages and Literature/ Humanities.
It offers a one-year Post-Graduate Diploma Program in Korean. It will gradually expand to include other programs in foreign languages.
9. Central University of Jharkhand (Centre for Far East Languages)
Established in 2009, The Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ), in keeping with the changing times in the age of globalization, started various foreign language courses.
It runs programs through the Centre for Far East Languages under the aegis of School of Languages.
All programs offer a multidisciplinary curriculum with a focus on history, literature, language, and culture.
Currently, it offers a 6-month Certificate, One year PG Diploma, and five years integrated (UG/PG) Master Degree programs in Korean.
Total Number of Seats are 40 for each course.
The admission is made through the CUCET or CUB entrance test.
CUJ is also one of the 5 TOPIK exam centers in India.
10. IGNOU (School of Foreign Languages)
Students interested in pursuing Korean Language courses in IGNOU can seek admission for a Certificate in Korean Language & Culture Programme (CKCL) through Distance Learning.
It was started in July 2018 session.
The CKLC aims at people who want to acquire basic level communication skills in Korean.
11. Christ University (Department of Languages)
Coming under the Deanery of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of Languages, which exists since the inception of the institution in 1969, presently offers various foreign language courses in Bangalore campus.
Currently, the center provides six months Basic Korean Level I and Level 2 from July to December and Jan to June every year, respectively.
12. Dr. BR Ambedkar University – Srikakulam
From the Academic Year 2016-17, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University has made an MOU with the Hansung University of South Korea to impart Korean courses at the university campus in Srikakulam.
As of today, The courses offered are 6-month beginners level Certificate course and 1-year Diploma. The classes are held thrice in a week.
13. Magadh University (Bodh Gaya)
The Academy of Foreign Languages and Cultural Cooperation (AFLCC) of MU is running a two-year Undergraduate diploma course in Korean at the Magadh University campus at Bodh Gaya, Bihar.
The two-year program is divided into a 1-year Diploma – 1 and then a 1-year Diploma – 2.
The total number of seats is 30 for each course.
To be admitted to Diploma – 1, a candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent, and those students who pass Diploma – 1 from the university shall be eligible for Diploma – 2.
14. University of Kolkata (Department of Languages)
The teaching of various foreign languages was started in Calcutta University in 1917, almost a century.
The department of languages offers a One-year Certificate and one-year Diploma Course in Korean.
Eligibility for the Certificate course is graduation in any discipline, whereas, for Diploma, Graduation in any discipline and certificate in Korean.
15. Jadavpur University (School of Languages and Linguistics)
Jadavpur University is a public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The school is currently functioning under the Faculty of Arts. It is expected to become a part of the faculty of Interdisciplinary schools once the JU act and statues are being revised.
Currently, the school of languages and linguistics at JU offers a 1-year certificate and a 1-year diploma in Korean.
16. Savitribai Phule Pune university
You can acquire an elementary level by enrolling in the Korean language course at Pune University. The KODIAN Pune organizes the course. The entire session lasts 48 hours.
The first batch was started in August 2019. The fee for a three months course is Rs.6,000. The students earn a Certificate on the completion of the program.
B) Korean Language Courses at Private Institutes
Sometimes it may not be feasible for you to attend the University classes. In that case, you can enroll in one of the reputed private or embassy affiliated Korean culture center.
You can even choose the timing and sometimes days as per your convenience. The admission is usually made on a first-come, first-serve basis.

2. Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Kolkata

As of June 2018, there were 174 King Sejong Institutes in 57 countries.
