1. Goa University

Can’t go to Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro, or São Paulo to immerse yourself in the Portuguese language and culture? No worries!

Take your pick of the Portuguese language at Goa University.

Founded in 1985, it is the only University in India and even in the entire Indian subcontinent that offers Master’s programs in Portuguese.

No surprise, Students from all over the country come here to study a lingua Portuguesa.

The Department of Portuguese & Lusophone Studies at Goa University offers BA, MA, and M.Phil in Portuguese.

It also conducts part-time Certificate I, II, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma of proficiency in Portuguese. For eligibility criteria and admission procedures, you can visit their website.

2. Chowgule College in Margao

The Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts & Science (Chowgule College), located in the South Goa district of Margao, is another incredible option for Portuguese enthusiasts.

They also have an MoU with the University of Porto in Portugal for academic and cultural exchange.

Through the center for Portuguese Language & Culture (CPLC), the university offers Portuguese courses for three levels: Basic, Elementary, Intermediate, and Vantage.

In collaboration with Instituto Camões, each program involves 120 hours of learning and usually completed in five months. The batches begin in January and July.

Since 2012, CPLC at Chowgule College also offers a Bachelor’s degree course in Portuguese.

They have a dedicated library, Portuguese film club and host various activities throughout the year to enhance the learning experience.

3. Instituto Camões in Panjim

If you want to go beyond the basics and take your Portuguese to a new level, Instituto Camões is a place to be.

Affiliated with Portugal’s Ministry of External Affairs, the cultural center supports the Portuguese language’s promotion worldwide.

In addition to New Delhi, Instituto Camões has a branch (Centre of Portuguese Language and Culture) in Panaji, Goa.

You’ll be speaking Portuguese from day one in a light-hearted and friendly atmosphere. Camoes also extends scholarships for students to study in Portugal.

The Embassy learning center conducts Portuguese classes for Basic, elementary, and intermediate levels such as A1, A2, B1.1, B1.2, etc., as per the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Camões is also an authorized test center for CAPLE, a Portuguese language proficiency exam. Plus, it has e-learning courses and conducts various workshops and cultural activities regularly.

4. Communicare Trust

There are a few more choices, but I’m only mentioning possibilities because of ambiguity and lack of enough information! Maybe, I will add more names in the future.

The Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law at Margao runs a certificate program in the Portuguese Language with Legal Inputs.

Indo-Portuguese Friendship Society, either on its own or through collaboration with different organizations like The Fundacao Cidade de Lisboa, conducts various Portuguese classes in other parts of Goa.

They also run customized programs such as conversations and courses for children.

    Happy to read your article. I teach português at Chowgule College Margão Goa for A1 A2 and B1 (intermédio) since 2011, immediately after passing my MA in Português literature from Goa University. I have passed DIPLE (intermédio) and DAPLE (avançado) conducted by CAPLE, University of Lisboa. So teaching português is my passion. I also teach português for TY BA at Chowgule College.

          Hello sir this is Faraz from Bhopal Madhya Pradesh. I want to learn the Portuguese language as I am keen to know more about the culture and traditions of the country but for that, I need to learn the language as it is the best way to know about any region. I don’t have any knowledge of this language and want to learn right from the alphabet to speaking it fluently but I don’t know where to start. I find online classes not very interesting because of which I want to have offline classes in Goa. Please guide me and help me what institute to join what should be the fees what is the eligibility etc. Thank you.
