What is the Chinese Proficiency Test?
HSK is the short form for Hanyu (Chinese) Shuiping (Level) Kaoshi (test). The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) meaning “Mandarin Level Test” or “Chinese Level Test.”
It is an international standardized test to assess the Chinese-language proficiency of non-native speakers and Chinese people living overseas, and Chinese national minorities.
It is organized by Hanban (汉办) the part of the Chinese education ministry also in charge of the Confucius Institute (孔子学院). The test measures your proficiency through listening, writing, and reading in the language.
Since July 2020, due to the controversy surrounding its functions, The center for language education and cooperation (CLEC) administrates the HSK test worldwide.
HSK tests are held across the world regularly. Candidates who pass the test are awarded the appropriate level of Chinese Proficiency Certificate.
Types of Mandarin Test
HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) assesses the test takers’ oral Chinese abilities. HSKK exam is divided into three levels — HSKK (Primary level), HSKK (Intermediate level), and HSKK (Advanced level). This exam is conducted in the form of audio recording.
Business Chinese Test (BCT) is another Chinese language proficiency test for foreigners engaged in business activities. The test consists of two relatively independent tests: BCT (Listening & Reading) and BCT (Speaking & Writing).
The candidates can sit for one or both of them at a time. There is no limit to candidates’ age, education, or Chinese proficiency level.
Youth Chinese Test (YCT), another Chinese language proficiency, assesses the Mandarin proficiency for school-going children. YCT is divided into writing and speaking tests, which are independent of each other.
The writing test consists of four levels, YCT (level I), YCT (level II), YCT (level III), and YCT (level IV). The speaking test comprises two levels, YCT Speaking (Primary Level) and YCT Speaking (Intermediate Level).

Levels (I, II, III, IV to V)
There are six HSK test levels: level I, II, III, IV, V, and VI. HSK tests include writing, listening, and reading skills.
The HSK levels correspond to the standards of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (CLPS) and Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
HSK oral test, i.e., HSKK, is divided into three levels — (i) HSK (Elementary), (ii) HSK (Intermediate), and (iii) HSK (Advanced).
The number of HSK levels will increase from six to nine in 2021. They are trying to bring HSK closer to par with the CEFR and make “three stages and nine levels.” I will update once they publish the complete details.
How to Pass the HSK exam?
The listening, reading, and writing tests each have a maximum score of 100. For HSK 1 and 2 – There is no written exam.
Minimum 120 out of 200 is required to pass Level 1 and 2. The higher levels, such as Level 3, 4, 5, and 6, have a maximum of 300 points with 180 points required to pass.

The certificates you will obtain from HSK are valid for a lifetime. However, in most cases, it will be useful for two years as a certification for international students to enter a college or university in China.
2021 Exam Dates
HSK Test dates are published annually, and exams are usually conducted 14 times a year. Generally, registration closes four weeks before the scheduled test.

Examination Fees in India
The test fee depends on the level you sign up for and the country where you decide to take it.
For the 2021 HSK Exam in India, Fees are ₹ 1500 (Level I), ₹ 2500 (Level II), ₹ 3500 (Level III), ₹ 4500 (Level IV), ₹ 5500 (Level V), and ₹ 6500 (Level VI).
