What is the Chinese Proficiency Test?
HSK is the short form for Hanyu (Chinese), Shuiping (Level), and Kaoshi (test). The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) means “Mandarin Level Test” or “Chinese Level Test.”
The test evaluates the Chinese language proficiency of people who are not native speakers, including Chinese people living abroad and Chinese national minorities.
It is organized by Hanban (汉办), part of the Chinese education ministry also in charge of the Confucius Institute (孔子学院). The test measures your proficiency through listening, writing, and reading in the language.
Since July 2020, due to the controversy surrounding its functions, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has administrated the HSK test worldwide.
HSK tests are held regularly across the world. Candidates who pass the test are awarded the appropriate Chinese Proficiency Certificate.
Types of Mandarin Test
HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) assesses the test takers’ oral Chinese abilities. HSKK exam is divided into three levels — HSKK (Primary level), HSKK (Intermediate level), and HSKK (Advanced level). This exam is conducted in the form of an audio recording.
Business Chinese Test (BCT) is another Chinese language proficiency test for foreigners engaged in business activities. The test consists of two relatively independent tests: BCT (Listening & Reading) and BCT (Speaking & Writing).
The candidates can sit for one or both of them at a time. There is no limit to candidates’ age, education, or Chinese proficiency level.
Youth Chinese Test (YCT), another Chinese language proficiency, assesses Mandarin proficiency for school-going children. YCT is divided into writing and speaking tests, independent of each other.
The writing test consists of four levels: YCT (level I), YCT (level II), YCT (level III), and YCT (level IV). The speaking test comprises YCT Speaking (Primary Level) and YCT Speaking (Intermediate Level).

HSK Levels (HSK Standard and HSKK)
There are six HSK test levels: I, II, III, IV, V, and VI. HSK tests include writing, listening, and reading skills.
The HSK levels correspond to the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (CLPS) standards and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
HSK oral test, i.e., HSKK, is divided into three levels — (i) HSK (Elementary), (ii) HSK (Intermediate), and (iii) HSK (Advanced).
The number of HSK levels will increase from six to nine in 2024. They are trying to bring HSK closer to par with the CEFR and make “three stages and nine levels.” I will update you once they publish the complete details.
How to Pass the HSK exam?
The listening, reading, and writing tests have a maximum score of 100. For HSK 1 and 2 – There is no written exam.
A minimum of 120 out of 200 is required to pass Levels 1 and 2. The higher levels, such as Levels 3, 4, 5, and 6, have a maximum of 300 points, with 180 points required to pass.

Certification Validity
The certificates you will obtain from HSK are valid for a lifetime. However, in most cases, it will be useful for two years as a certification for international students to enter a college or university in China.
2024 Exam Dates
HSK Test dates are published annually, and exams are usually conducted 14 times yearly. Generally, registration closes four weeks before the scheduled test.
Results are typically declared in 4 to 6 weeks after the exam. Check the 2024 dates for HSK exams in India.

Examination Fees in India
The test fee depends on the level you sign up for and the country where you decide to take it.
For the 2024 HSK Exam in India, Fees are ₹ 1500 (Level I), ₹ 2500 (Level II), ₹ 3500 (Level III), ₹ 4500 (Level IV), ₹ 5500 (Level V), and ₹ 6500 (Level VI).
For HSKK, YCT, and BCT exams – fees range between ₹ 500 to ₹ 4000 depending upon the type of test and level. Contact the respective HSK official test centers in India for details.

Learning a language like Mandarin is difficult from only Youtube. You need more formal education like teacher, books, audio lessons, conversations classes, etc.

HSK level 3 or higher definately improves the chances of getting the scholarship, but it depends on the university. Every university has a different set of requirements, and if you fit, you can apply for it. You have to check with various universities and their criterias.

The timetable given on this website is for offline-based paper pen mode, right? For the home-based edition, it’s only three times I think? Is it right? I got confused with these dates.
Yes. These are offline dates. The home-based are temporary and offered by Mumbai University in collaboration with Confucius institute. You can check on the MU site.

Hello, I’m an MBBS student currently studying in China and my university has told us to pass HSK4 by the end of this year. I contacted Confucius institute of Mumbai and according to their site they are taking home-based HSK exams but the registration is limited and now have been closed because I got late apparently.
So I checked this site chinesetest.cn and according to this site the Mumbai institute is the only test centre in India. My query is are these other centres official and recognized by the Chinese government?

I seriously don’t know any other solution other than taking the exam if it is compulsory. Perhaps, you can write to the concerned University with the current situation and difficulty. You can also take the HSK exam in China if feasible for you. Another solution is to contact all centers in India and ask for any exam date in 2020.

Recently I met someone who gave HSK 4 exam last year and studied in China for a year. Before the procedure was easy, you just apply for HSK level 4 and pass the exam. After around one month or more, you will get your result then apply for a scholarship if you want to. If you apply for it, it may take time and will ask you a letter of recommendation also, and if you don’t want a scholarship then directly apply for any University there. But due to issues between these two countries, I am worried a bit as I don’t have any idea about scholarship and HSK exams anymore.
No, it’s an easy one. I’ve studied in Jiangsu province. We have two scholarships, CSC (national), Jasmine (provincial scholarship). You can apply only for one. In my university, many people from Bangladesh are studying engineering (400), with scholarships. Don’t trust any agents. Go directly to the university website and apply for it. They will happy to take you in. Always try for the universities in the city. They will be more advanced when compared to one in towns

Just google it words for hsk 4 examinations. There will be a complete list of 2000 words, pinyin, explanations, tense form. Just by practice it, you can easily pass the examinations, don’t take too much time. If your planning to start, try to give the examinations within 6 months.

HSK exam conducted in India is accepted all over the world. You can contact your nearest HSK test centers about upcoming exam dates. And if for some reason, this particular university doesn’t recognize it, I guess there is no solution other than contacting them for other alternatives.
Just give the examination in India, and submit the certificate. They won’t say anything. They will simply accept the certificates. They don’t want to retain.
