Embassies Of India and Foreign Countries

An embassy is a diplomatic building that represents a country in another country.

No nation exists without an embassy in another territory or embassies of other countries within its region.

For embassies to function effectively, they require the services of an ambassador and people for the vital post representing the country concerned.

Together with an entourage of staff, assist the embassy in working appropriately on behalf of their parent nation.

All this creates many job opportunities for language learners to operate and help perform foreign policy tasks and diplomatic relations with the host nation.

Types Of Foreign Language Jobs Available In Embassies

Foreign language jobs in embassy

Most foreign embassies send their citizens to occupy top positions in their operations in another country. In other areas, they need the services of employees from the host nation.

Foreign language jobs in embassies are usually high-paying. The prestige of working for a foreign embassy or your country is always something to cherish.

In general, qualifications and skills other than language are also demanded.

You can do multiple jobs at the embassy using your skills in a foreign language.

You can also work as a receptionist, customer support, office executive, IT technical staff, translator, administrative job, interpreter, dealing with passports and visas, press office job, research analyst, messengers and logistics, and low-paying wage positions.

How do you get a job at a foreign embassy in India?

The language jobs in the embassy are very fruitful job profiles.

Almost all embassies worldwide hire local staff from the host country to assist with a wide array of jobs. Each embassy is different, though its rules are somewhat similar.

As in any other job, the essential requirement is a college bachelor’s degree and experience in the related field.

The eligibility criteria depend upon the nature of the work and responsibilities.

However, requirements vary from a Master’s in International relations to IT professionals.

In nearly all cases, the aspirants must have superior communication skills and be fluent in the host country’s local or official languages for office jobs.

Since the number of new openings is limited, knowing the latest opportunities and applying promptly is essential. You can always check the official websites of the respective embassies and consulates.

Besides, you can call the embassy’s human resources office, regularly check job portals, browse through newspapers, and develop contacts who can refer you for a job in an embassy.

The jobs are for both permanent and temporary positions.

The trick is to get an entry-level job, even on a contractual or temporary basis. It is always easier than well-paid jobs.

While doing such work, you will learn the tricks required to advance your career and develop contacts and friends in the system.

All this information and connections will help you to climb the ladder for more lucrative jobs in embassies.

There are different kinds of language jobs in the embassy, and these areas include:

Language Jobs in Embassies

1. Translators & Interpreters

These are some of the job opportunities most foreign embassies offer job seekers from the host country.

For instance, the French or Netherlands embassies in India will seek one or more translators and interpreters who can speak French or Dutch alongside the regional language.

2. Human Resource

Some embassies may have their HR Departments occupied by professionals. This is another area often open to job seekers from the host country.

Again, this is where your expertise in that country’s foreign language can land you a lucrative job in an executive or managerial role.

3. Economic Department

It is another specialization area that is always in demand by foreign embassies.

Although your language ability may not be entirely adequate to earn you the job, it is still a must-have for job seekers with economic experience seeking to occupy such a position.

You will be responsible for reporting economic development in the host country and providing sound analysis and advice on financial issues.

4. Finance Section

Again, you will need an added qualification in finance, such as an MBA in economics. With your foreign language skills, you can get a job offer in a foreign embassy’s finance section.

For instance, the US embassy in India or elsewhere will require a counselor or specialist on financial matters.

It is to furnish reports on financial markets, macro and micro (economics), research, and policymaking.

The counselor will also respond to inquiries about their nation’s financial situation and the economy.

5. Library Section

All embassies or affiliated culture centers in the world have a library section.

It creates the need for a librarian and other staff responsible for maintaining books and other essential materials in the library.

Your foreign language ability can help update the library and make translations where possible.

6. Diplomatic Coordinator

Most embassies in India periodically look for people who understand the workings and situations of national and international current affairs while possessing excellent communication skills.

It is another surpassing job area for job seekers with foreign language skills.

7. Research analyst and Market Researcher

All the embassies, consulates, and other diplomatic representations are presenting their Government.

They do extensive research for various reasons, such as bilateral relations, the scope of business expansion, and enhancing the host nation’s cultural footprint.

They employ local research analysts or field researchers for all these research activities. A college degree, preferably an MBA, and strong analytical and communication skills are prerequisites.

Jobs in consulates

Some research analyst jobs require good knowledge of a particular foreign language.

It will help those conducting the research when information that may not be available in English or the local language and translation is needed.

Additionally, a local citizen will understand their country better than a foreign citizen.

8. Information Technology/Science

IT personnel are in high demand in every embassy to enhance efficiency in areas ranging from web development to system maintenance.

If you think knowledge of computers alone will guarantee automatic employment in the foreign embassy’s IT department concerned, you are mistaken.

A certificate backed by proficiency in a foreign language is a surefire way to obtain considerable employment with various embassies in India.

The ability to speak a foreign language as a secondary qualification puts you ahead of others for such jobs.

9. Trainer in an embassy’s culture center

At least 13 culture centers affiliated with different embassies in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Chennai, and other parts of India offer various foreign language courses in embassies.

My rough calculation shows roughly 300 foreign language instructors work in India’s cultural wings and language learning centers.

While some of them are native speakers, a majority of them are Indians.

At least half of them work with L’Alliance Française (a cultural wing of the Embassy of France) and Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan (affiliated with the embassy of Germany).

There are more job opportunities in French and German than, say, Portuguese or Japanese as far as teaching jobs in embassies are concerned.

There’s just one caveat.

The minimum eligibility criteria for such an opening are a master’s degree or the highest proficiency level, such as C2 (CEFR – European languages).

If you’re studying one of the East Asia languages, you should aim for TOPIK Level 6 / JLPT N1 / HSK Level 6.

Once selected, they will offer Initial teacher training through various routes. Based on my personal interaction, the salary is quite good.

10. Customer support

Every embassy hires people to provide customer support for many processes involving different roles.

Some well-known examples include document tasks, collecting and processing information, voice-based jobs, accounting services, the back office, document translation, proofreading, and transactions.

The helpdesks also provide telephone and email support to foreign tourists visiting India for travel, study, and business.

How to get a job in the Indian embassy abroad?

Jobs in Foreign Embassies India

In one word – Difficult

Suppose you want a job at the Indian embassy or abroad. In that case, you must crack the Foreign Service Exams (IFS) through the combined civil services exam.

The Indian Government also employs personnel from other departments, such as SSC, IAS, IPS, IRS, Defense Services, etc. In short, almost all of them are government employees.

So, there are no specific walk-in interviews for such jobs. The Indian embassy in foreign countries does employ local citizens for various positions. However, they are locals and not Indians.

How do they learn the language? If you secure a high rank in civil services, you can choose IFS and later decide which foreign language to learn.

After being selected, you must learn a one-compulsory Foreign Language (CFL) during your training. You have to choose from a list of languages offered each year.

During the training, an IFS officer was ranked third secretary. Once you clear the CFL test, you will be promoted to the second secretary’s level.

Prior knowledge of any foreign language is not required, though it is helpful. Students can also choose to acquire an optional foreign language (OFL).

It does not mean there is no vacancy for Indians who are not government employees. The Indian government offers several job opportunities for Indians skilled in foreign languages.

Many foreign language experts work in different government departments, from the Defence Attaché to the Tourism Department to IT.

However, you may need expertise in that domain and years of experience for such vacancies.

Maybe this topic will be for another day.

Final Thought (Conclusion)

The activities of any embassy in India or abroad are not limited to the size of the building.

With your language skills, either as a primary or secondary qualification, you can do many language jobs in the embassy.

Just take your time to search, and I’m sure you will find something fitting sooner or later.

It is one area in which you can flourish handsomely with your knowledge of a foreign language.

No, you need near-native proficiency like DALF C2 or MA in French, followed by a teacher’s training program and their other guidelines. You can then apply for such jobs if there is any new opening. For English teaching jobs in France, most organizations prefer native English speakers from the UK, the USA, Australia, etc. Indians can also apply, but it depends on the requirement.

Hi Vikash, My name is Madhu and I am pursuing my Senior 1 level in Spanish. I want to know about the different levels of courses provided by institutes for foreign languages. Some institutes follow CEFR pattern, and some renowned college or university provides Certification, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma. Also, why do some institutes follow the A1.1, A1.2, B1.1, B1.2, B1.3 kind of pattern?

What is the basic difference between CEFR pattern and Certification, Diploma and Advance Diploma patterns? Is there any market value for different patterns in finding a job?

CEFR is language ability, mainly European, on a six-point scale, from A1 to C2. Embassies affiliated centers and many private institutes follow this model. Sublevels like A1.1, B2.2, etc., are related to CEFR. On the other hand, colleges and universities have their curriculum based on part-time and degree programs. The difference is mainly about duration, approach, and focus area. CEFR model is usually better than part-time university courses from the job perspective as it focuses more on practical usage like speaking and listening section. You can pick any program and make a successful career depending on your engagement with the language.

You can make a full-time career out of languages. Many people do that and are successful. However, if you wish to diversify and minimize the risk, you would be better off combining a part-time language program with full-time UG and PG degree programs.

I have completed my B2 with Alliance Francaise de Bombay and I’m currently in my final year of BMS. I am not quite decided on a stream yet but know for a fact that I would like to make a career in the French language streams. I am confused between 1) Doing my Masters in French 2) MBA in International Relations 3) MBA in marketing. Between the 3 is there any you can recommend to me which could keep my options open or which currently offers more scope and wider horizon? I went through your article on the various job prospects regarding the French language and it was extremely helpful since this is a subject not many can help us with.

    Thank you so so much.

You can choose between MBA/PGDBA in IR or Marketing. Both are good and open a wide range of job opportunities. But make sure to do it from a reputed university. A combination of French and MBA can help you land a job in a French company, MNC, or Indian companies with global footprints. It will also help you if you gain some relevant experience before your masters.

An embassy is like a corporate company where all kinds of jobs exist. While some are meant for natives, but many positions are open for local candidates. There is no particular academic qualification that can be considered as the most suitable. Instead of focusing on a specific stream, think about your interest, feasibility and type of courses you want to pursue. Then maybe in the future, you can find something that fits your goal.

There is no specific criteria or procedure. Make a list of all embassies associated with the Spanish-speaking region. Then, check their websites or their social media handles for the post related to the new openings. Since the requirement is few, thus they update through their official channels. If you find something good enough and you fit the criteria, you can apply for it as per details.

If it is possible, join any reputed Korean learning centers. Aim for advanced levels, like TOPIK V or VI. Then after graduation, you can either pick a Masters’s in the stream of your choice or an MA in Korean.

But most importantly, it depends on the embassies and their requirement. Spanish is one of the good choices since it is useful in over several embassies.

There is no particular language that is preferred in embassies. But since there are more French, Spanish, and Arabic speaking countries, thus, these languages offer more job opportunities in various foreign embassies. From time to time, different embassies publish about new openings on their websites and social media channels, if you are eligible as per their requirement, you can apply for it.

JNU is, of course, better than DU. If you are not able to crack the entrance for either one and ready to relocate to a different city, there are 28 Universities with an MA in French programs. You can check the article “Masters in French.” Amity Noida, though a private University, also offers an MA course, and admission is quite easy.

There are very limited vacancies in Embassies. If you find one (they usually publish on their website and social media channels), you can apply for it. There is no specific criteria as it varies depending upon the job profile.

To my knowledge, they don’t hire German translators or interpreters. If they need, they can utilize German teachers’ skills of their own Goethe-Institut or native employees of the embassy. There may be some requirements, but that would be once in a blue moon.

After graduation, you can consider a full-time MBA from a reputed university. And simultaneously, strive for C2. Viel Glück!

Every embassy has an autonomous hiring process. So, you have to track them individually. The choice of language is pretty subjective. Pick the one you like.

In recent years, the number of job openings has decreased in the embassy as most of the visa-related works are outsourced to third parties like VFS global and BLS International. Most of the embassies jobs require other skills from IT to Customer support. Make a decent job profile, send to 25+ Hispanic countries. You can check the news/jobs/update section of these embassies website and social media spaces regularly. Good Luck, Urvashi.

But there is one caveat; you might have to start as a fresher. It would be better to look for a combination that includes your existing skills, experience, and Spanish.

I have completed level b1 from Alliance Française and will be doing B2. So, are there any job opportunities to start with according to my qualifications. And do I have to have any other degree to get a job related to French in the embassy or MNC?

I don’t know much about psychology-related careers. In MNC, you have both kinds of jobs — French specialists, as well as other positions where French can be value addition. In embassies, most assignments require qualifications other than French. Language plays a vital role, but in most cases, it is not compulsory.

There are many options, and one such great possibility is MBA in in-demand specialization from any reputed university. After your masters, you can apply for any job that fits you. Besides, you can also try many high-paying jobs in MNCs.

In Europe, they usually hire native language teachers. You can try as an ESL (English as a Second Language teacher). You may need a master’s in English along with the acquaintance of the official language of the country where you’re teaching. Also, instead of focusing on multiple languages, aim for a higher competency level in one language. For instance, B2-C2 of the Goethe-Zertifikat (German) or DELF/DALF (French).

I wish life was that simple 🙂 To become an ambassador or Diplomat, you have to join IFS (Indian Foreign Service). And for that, you have to crack UPSC with excellent ranking. While foreign language skills are obviously an added advantage, it, however, doesn’t play any role as far as selection is concerned.

After graduation, you can consider an in-demand master’s degree like an MBA from a reputed University. It can improve your career options. After the certificate, you can also continue with the Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Spanish. To check your level and gain an international diploma, take DELE or SIELE exam.

Besides, you can consider Cd’A Global Language Centre or Ramakrishna Mission School of Languages in Golpark. Getting a job solely based on Spanish is challenging since there are a limited number of new openings for the same. No, it doesn’t matter where you study. In the end, only your Spanish fluency will matter if that is the requirement.

After achieving B2, if you find an opportunity in an embassy where finance and Spanish are prerequisites, you can apply. You have to be proactive to get employment in embassies. In MNC, there are plenty of possibilities. My suggestion would be to make financial education as primary and Spanish, the secondary skill. Besides, you can also pursue an MBA after your major.

    Hey,
I’m looking for a foreign language job in Italian or Indian embassy or any embassy. I have done my graduation BA (Hons) in Italian from Delhi University and I also have a diploma course in tourism from IGNOU. Is there any way someone could guide me through. I have worked for 1 year with the Amazon development center as well.

There is a limited number of job opportunities as an Italian specialist. Amazon, Accenture, HCL, are few companies that hire. There are no particular criteria for positions in the embassy. If there is any requirement, and you fulfill the eligibility, you can apply. There is a requirement for an Italian job in a travel company in Delhi. Check your email 🙂

I want to pursue a career in language. Probably learning a foreign language is enthusiastic for me. I also want to serve the nation. I am a 12th standard PCM student right now in ISC board. My achievement is that I’ve secured 3rd position in Zonal Interschool Creative Writing Competition which held in Meerut. Sir, I want to ask what should I opt for after 12th so that I may be fluent in a foreign language. I shall be highly obliged to you.

If you wish to be fluent, you can opt for Bachelor and then Master program in the language concerned. Besides, you can also join any private institute for the same. All depends on why you want to be fluent. From career to the pursuit of a hobby — Reasons are countless! I guess you need a proper career counseling which I don’t offer. There are hardly any Interpreter jobs in the embassy of South Korea, at least not in my knowledge. You can, however, find such possibilities in various MNCs. To become an interpreter, you need near-native fluency in Korean. That will take a long time, more than one can imagine. At your age, it is better to focus on learning, rather than earning.

The eligibility criteria depend on the job requirement. For different openings, there are different prerequisites. For any decent job, a master degree along with relevant experience is an added advantage.

Neither learning Spanish can help you get a job in the embassy nor you need to work in any Embassy to learn Spanish. While the number of new openings is very limited, the requirement, however, varies greatly as per the nature of the work. For instance, if there is any new opening for HR job, one needs MBA in HR along with relevant experience. The good communication skills and ability to speak the language of the embassy’s origin country is an added advantage. One can find such jobs on various job portals or embassy official websites.

Well, it is not that easy. To get a job in the Indian embassy abroad, you need to pass the civil services exam and then you have to be an IFS (Indian Foreign Services). It is not compulsory to know a foreign language since you will learn one during your training after you’ve been selected. They might hire a few people on a contractual or temporary basis, but it is rare to find such possibilities!
