2. Human Resource
While some embassies may have their HR Department occupied by their professionals, it is another area that is often open for job seekers from the host country. 3. Economic Department
This is another area of specialization that is always in demand by foreign embassies. Although your proficiency in a particular foreign language may not be entirely adequate to earn you the job, it is always a MUST HAVE for job seekers with economic experience seeking to occupy such a position. You will be a task with making reports on economic development in the host country concerned and providing sound analysis and advice on economic issues.
4. Finance Section
Again, you will need to have an added qualification in areas of finance such as MBA in finance together with your foreign language skills to get a job offer in the finance section of a foreign embassy. For instance, the US embassy in India or elsewhere will require a counsellor or specialist on financial matters to furnish reports on financial markets, macro and microeconomics activities, research and policymaking. The counsellor will also be responsible for giving replies to inquiries about their nation financial situations and economy.
5. Library Section
All embassies or affiliated culture centres in the world have a library section. This creates the need to have a librarian and other staffs who will be responsible for taking care of books and other essential materials in the library. Here, your skill in a foreign language can come handy in updating the library and making translations where possible.
6. Diplomatic Coordinator
Most of the embassies in India periodically look for people who understand the workings and situations of the national and international current affairs, while possessing excellent communication skills. This is another good job area for job seekers with foreign language skills.
7. Research analyst and Market Researcher
All the embassies, consulates and other diplomatic representations presenting their government. They make lots of research for a variety of reasons like bilateral relation, scope of business expansion, enhance the culture footprint in the host nation, just to name a few. For all these research activity, they employ local for research analyst or field researcher opening. A college degree preferably MBA and strong analytical and communication skills are prerequisite.
Some research analyst jobs require good knowledge in a particular foreign language. This will be helpful for those conducting the research when information that may not be available in English or local language and translation is required at the end. Additionally, a local citizen will understand better about his/her country than a foreign citizen.
8. Information Technology/Science
In every embassy, IT personnel are in high demand to enhance the efficiency of the embassy, ranging from web-development to system maintenance. If you think knowledge of computers alone will guarantee you automatic employment in the IT Department of the foreign embassy concerned, then you are mistaking.
A certificate backed by proficiency in a foreign language is a sure fire for most considerable employments with various embassies in India. The ability to speak a foreign language as a secondary qualification puts you ahead of others for such jobs.
9. Foreign Language trainer in an embassy affiliated culture centre
These are at least 13 culture centres affiliated to different foreign embassies in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Chennai, and other parts of India offering various foreign language courses in embassies. According to my rough calculation, roughly 300 foreign language teachers are working in these culture wing and language learning centres across the country. While some of them are native speakers, a majority of them are Indians.
At least half of them are working with L’Alliance Française (a cultural wing of Embassy of France) and Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan (affiliated to embassy of Germany). Obviously, there are more job opportunities in French and German than say Portuguese or Japanese as far as Foreign language teaching jobs in embassies are concerned.
There’s just one caveat. The minimum eligibility criteria to apply for such opening is a master degree or highest proficiency level such as C2 (CEFR – European) or TOPIK Level 6 / JLPT N1 / HSK Level 6 (East Asian Languages). Once selected, they will offer Initial Teacher Training through a variety of routes. Based on my personal interaction, the salary is quite good.
